After losing my job & divorced, at 42 I decided to attend University full-time from 1995 to 1999. I sold my car (to raise money) and cycled to university. It was a 51-mile round trip, 3 or 4 days a week. I'm now 71, and I still don't own or want a car, last year I cycled 11, 800 miles, and this year is set to be a similar mileage. I own 8 bikes, do all my own maintenance in a garage totally dedicated to bikes and I love it 🤩

One aspect of commuting by bike is the mental part which is maybe the most important. I commute 15 miles each way which gives me an hour to just think without real distraction. I don’t use earphones and just soak in my surroundings. Riding, shifting, braking all become second nature and while I am still paying attention with half my brain the other part is free to roam. I can’t tell you how many work or personal issues I’ve resolved on the way home and always end up in a better head space at the end of the ride.

The Commuting content shift is the best change to GCN has made over the last while.

I am commuting a measly 3 km by bike, twice per day, throughout all year, no matter the weather. That is not a lot. Still, I cycled 120 km per month more, than someone commuting by car, and that just shows. It activates me in the mornings, it calms me in the afternoons, it gets the body moving and breathing.

Bike commuted for 40 years. Always in work clothes, shoes with flat pedals. No back packs! Went slow, stayed cool and generally enjoyed each journey.

I’ve been riding a road bike since I was 10 years old 1961 Sydney Australia. When I became an adult and a commercial pilot, I still rode my bicycle to work put the bike in the hanger when I was gone. Still ride my road bike today 74 years old.

This is the kind of content we need! I live in the USA and it takes me twice as long to bike commute than by car (about 10 miles), but it is still well worth it! I have a goal to bike to work every above freezing day.

Since I started commuting by bike I've realized how stressful driving is. Whenever I have to drive I'm constantly thinking about not being fined for something, not hitting anything, being aware of the traffic 100% of the time, looking for a parking spot... While on a bicycle you can simply stop anywhere if you want to, you don't need to worry about losing money if you scratch your bike (if it's a cheap one like mine), and in a somewhat decent bike path your mind is so relaxed, even while you're trying to be alert for murderous car drivers.

My 2x13k commuting in Munich to an industrial zone in the outskirts of Munich:
Car: 50 min morning, 20 min late at night with no traffic.
Public transport: 50 min (if all trains arrive on time)
Commuter bike: 42 min in Zone 1-2
Road bike: 27 min full throttle

For me, it's fun, health, training, relaxation - and gaining 4, 5 hrs of training time without having to sacrifice time with my family.

I commute, 3km each way. I started cycling this a couple years ago. I was suprised how much my mood was lifted every morning by this simple 10min journey. Recently started going a slightly longer route home via the canal towpath. Avoidance of rush hour traffic lifts my mood again on way home.

I allways commute by bike.
I remember a discussion between two dads in the kindergarten i worked in at the time. one cycled into the city of århus the other drove in his car.
And the driver asked the cyclist why on earth he did that when it took so ling (roughly 25minuttes by car and 40 minuttes on bycycle)
And the cyclists answer was "I get an 1hour20 minuttes worth of excersise every day in 30 minuttes"

4 season commuter in New England. 30 mile round trip, five days a week. I lose a couple of weeks in the winter around snow storms, but honestly the roads are clear most of the time. The emotional well being is as big a motivation as any other. Don't undersell that benefit. Great resources at work for bike storage and showers. Winter is a tough one to work up to, but its very rewarding.

Commuting by bike puts me in a good mood, gets the endorphins going, and since I am lucky enough to ride in along a canal, is pleasant and safe too. I also want to add I think Conor is a legend!

For years I used to commute around 25 km per day and prior to that around 100km.

I got knocked off my bike by a lorry one morning and haven't ridden much since then. Would like to, but confidence seriously dented. I Zwift as often as I can and find groups rides a lot of fun.

I am a fairweather cycle commuter, and I am trying to ride my bike more often when the weather is cooler and wetter. My commute is about 15km each way. Averaged out over the year about half of my commutes are done by bicycle, with more frequent cycle commuting days (4ish days a week) in warmer and drier months when there are more hours of daylight. My goal this past year - which I achieved! - was to commute by bicycle at least once a month. While I live in one of Canada's milder climates, I still felt like riding my bike to work in January was an accomplishment! I am beginning to get more confident about riding in the dark, which is definitely a factor between November and February.

I gave up owning a car and started exclusively commuting by bike about two and a half years ago. It's been - no exaggeration - life changing. I weigh more than twenty pounds (~10kg) less than I have for much of my adult life, have energy like I've never had it, shed chronic anxiety, and just learned to love being outside and feeling the air and the weather...even at 7, 000 feet (just over 2100 m) elevation in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I realized after the first year that I hate driving - traffic, being in a windowed box in a fixed position, not feeling connected to the surroundings... I don't even hate wind anymore! 😅

Thanks for the video, Conor, I hope it helps other people at least try this out. (And yes, people might find it hard to believe, but I can get most places in town faster - and with much less stress - than someone driving. I do it all the time and the car drivers are always amazed that a 55 year old guy on a bike can get to the door faster than they did driving.)

Great video! I live in Coventry, and recently, the council has invested in bike lanes, and people are really excited and angry about it! It's reminiscent of what happened in the Netherlands many years ago. Without a doubt, I can now cross the entire city in just 25 minutes, whereas by car, it takes 30-40 minutes on a good day! Watching GCN makes me feel like I'm not alone in the bike commuting movement! One thing the people against the cycle lanes dont visualize, is the amount of kids that are able to go to school using their bike in a safe space!
