This Weapon Showed No Mercy For Angry Grizzly Attack

It was September, 2021, when Sam Kezar and his friend, Jarred, went to #wyoming , just outside the Yellowstone National Park for some elk #hunting The two of them were experienced hunters, and they knew how to get what they wanted. They also knew they were hunting in bear country, so safety was a top priority to both of them. In fact, that was part of the reason Jarred was there in the first place – to provide aid in the eventuality of a bear attack. This doesn’t mean Kezar wasn’t very well prepared on his own. As it turned out, the opposite was quite true, but no one should ever refuse any additional safety measure. #grizzlybear

That’s always the dilemma…. One shoots a bear, mountain Lion, moose or whatever that is about to attack you and then you contemplate after the fact, “do I tell somebody or not?” The way some are treated by authorities after an animal self defense situation and it seems just easier to leave the carcass out in the middle of nowhere and walk away. Telling somebody these days seems to just cause heart ache and worry after the fact, because the authorities are just looking to collect evidence to prosecute you. Sad.

If I ever have to defend myself and shoot a bear I will not report to anyone. I will just move on.

Had a conversation with a retired Game Warden of 32 years service. He said he never goes into the woods without being armed no matter what. He said you never know what you could encounter. Take that for what it's worth.

It’s silly to have a federal investigation on someone who volunteers the info that they killed a bear that attacked them. If someone simply killed a bear for the heck of it, they wouldn’t tell authorities they were attacked; they’d just slink away.

Guy uses gun for self defence, then the cops try to pin him for a crime and send him to jail. Typical justice system. Makes victims out to be criminals.

I know a guy who was charged by a grizzly while packing out an elk quarter. He had a Taurus .41 Mag revolver and stopped it with two rounds to the chest. And yes, the wildlife bureaucrats went over his actions with a fine-toothed comb. Fortunately he survived his encounter with the bureaucrats, just like he did with the bear.

A gun shot in Wyoming is a dinner bell to the grizzlies.

A "Federal Investigation", because a man shot a charging bear. Those people need to get a real job.

I am 86 yrs. old and I have been saying what the Game Warden below is saying for years. I see these idiots going into the forest and woods to camp for years without a weapon. There are mountain lions and bears in the woods and forest and sometimes they will use you for food.

So if it's an endangered species, it can legally kill you? I don't think so. The man had every right to protect his life.

Amazing how different these stories go when the person is prepared

When I was visiting a friend in AK (KODIAK country) I carried a S&W Model 629 Classic (that's a stainless steel .44 magnum revolver) on my hip. Never had to use it, but I kept that and TWO (2) speedloaders with 44 mag hot loads just in case. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE wants to be killed by a Kodiak/Grizzly bear. They dont' bother killing you first, they just take bites out of you while your'e still alive. I love wildlife, but I will defend myself if I need to.

I love how the commentator says that grizzly bear attacks are rare; they’re not rare when you’re the one attacked. 😅

Back in the mid 80’s I worked with a woman geologist who had done her thesis field work in Alaska. I asked her what she did for bear protection and she told a funny story. Initially, her and her brother (who was helping as her field assistant) were looking to rent a large bore handgun thinking weight-wise it would be a better deal since they would be lugging around rock samples. The guy at the sporting good store said “ yeah…I can rent you this handgun…and I’ll even grind the sights off for you”. Puzzled they ask why would you do that? He replied that “well…when the griz grabs the pistol out of your hand and shoves it up your butt…it won’t hurt as much”. They ended up renting a rifle.

When I lived in Durango Colorado my property was 5 acres and bears (Big Ass Bears) would break into my fenced in area while crushing the horse fence to steal my garbage and drag it deeper into my property to eat it. Well I had to go back there later to clean up the mess. I always carried my 357 and my M1A with me to do this cleanup because once those bears had my garbage it was then their food and they would kill me if they caught me going after it. This scared the hell out of me a number of times on my own property.

In Alaska, sometimes "bear spray" is called "seasoning for bear food". I have been much closer to brown bears several times than I ever wanted to be. I was challenged 1 time by a very large brown bear, which only walked up to me, put it's nose about inches from my rifle barrel, then it walked away. A couple times I walked between sows and cubs trying to control the idiotic movements of tourists that had absolutely no idea the danger that they were walking into, trying to get close up photos. If you see fresh signs of bears, go somewhere else. You certainly do not want the bear to think that you are stalking it. If a bear charges you, that is the worst situation. Stay safe in the woods and have a great day!!!

Considering I've heard that bear attacks are supposed to be rare, there sure are a hell of a lot of videos on YouTube about bear attacks, so it's obviously not that rare.

I was stationed at Coast Guard Commsta Kodiak many years ago, we got to know some bears. ALL of the old timers scoffed at the notion of using just a pistol when in brown bear territory, their recommendation was a 12ga shotgun like a Winchester 1300 defender. So I got one... Still have it as a matter of fact. The first three rounds 00 buck and the last few slugs = dead elephant. But as I found out it kinda' sucked dragging a shot gun around. Pistols are good and in the right hands lights out for a big bear, but after seeing what a medium sized bear did to a Scottish Highlander cow on the way to work one day, I wound up dragging the shotgun around. One swipe and a quick bite and 800 lb moo moo was heaped up and mangled. While Bossy was still kicking she was slowly ripped up and turned into bear poo, very disturbing. Ursus Arctos Horribilus are some bad assed critters that require a hefty boom to dispatch. 10mm.... maybe, but really it was good shooting that kept these guys from becoming bear poo (!) Even tho' I live in black bear [big dogs really] country now It's still a shotgun for yours truly.
