Quite pleased w/ this very straightforward radio ( overall).
Also as an added bonus, my older Motorola spkrmics work perfectly on this!

The larger capacity battery and a good antenna are great upgrades. My 65 is used as a mobile with magnet mount antenna center of roof. 6 watts hi power on VHF. Almost 5 watts on UHF. SWR 1.2 or lower.

a few years ago, I bought an FT-4 for myself to have as an emergency backup radio. I wanted something I could rely on in the backcountry and not worry if something happened to it-$90 to replace as opposed to my $400 VX-8!
I am an Extra & my wife is a Tech. When the FT-65 came out, I decided IT would be a replacement for my wife's 12 Year old FT-60. Christmas came & I gave the her FT-65. SHE decided she preferred the smaller size of the FT-4, so I said "okay". She got the 4 & I kept the 65, LOL! I like the 65 SO much, I'll be getting a second one.

I plan to build a small Go Kit around the pair of 65's. I still have my VX-8 and will until they pry it from my cold, dead hands! I also have a VX-6. My "Plan" is to have the VX-6 as my everyday Carry Radio, the VX-8 for Special Event work, and the 65's when deployed for an emergency or public Service situation.
My proposed 65 Go Kit will be housed in a Harbor Freight knockoff of a Pelican Case (Orange). The case will ALSO have a 30 Amp Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery, 10 Amp Lithium Charge Controller MC-4 to Anderson Connector adaptor, Two 12 Volt Cig Sockets and FOUR 3 Amp usb outputs.

In addition, it will also house TWO Goal Zero Mini usb lanterns, Two Stubby Duck Antennas along with a Pair of Diamond Antennas, Two drop-in chargers, and a Wall charger for the 30 Amp Battery. Finally, it will also hold a 150 Watt Pure Sine Inverter, and an All-Powers 60 Watt holdup Solar Panel.

It will ALL be self-contained in the Hard Case. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT BUILT!

One thing I WILL say about the FT-65. The Owner's Manual is a JOKE! I had to watch a LOT of YT Videos to figure out how to program it, and I made a Cheat Sheet which has turned out to be a LIFESAVER!

Really appreciate this. Brand new tech as of yesterday. My plan is to get a base and HT. Was narrowing things down to some reasonably priced HT’s with decent reviews. Looking at the Wouxun KG-UV9PX and UV9p. Any advice with these choices or perhaps a different. Do not have a computer so anything preloaded and/or manually keypad programable would be preferred. Thanks again for the outstanding walkthrough. I saved this incase i get this HT.

I got two uv5rs, and neither of them has ever picked up anything in the two years I've had them. They are jailbroken/programmed whatever you wanna call it. Just never heard anything. Now I've also been told nobody uses any of the bands around where I live, so I ordered one of these last night. Hopefully I can get it to pick up something, if not I guess I'll quit being weird and just use my cell phone like a normal person.
