What Yevgeny Prigozhin’s presumed death means for Ukraine – BBC News

Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin is presumed to have died in a plane crash near Moscow, which killed all 10 people on board - and while his death has yet to be officially confirmed, Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid tribute to his former ally.

The mercenary group has been active on the battlefields of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, and Volodymyr Havrylov, Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine told the BBC that Prigozhin’s death could have an impact on the “confidence and morale” of Wagner troops – particularly among the lower ranks.

Meanwhile, the UK defence ministry has said that although there is “no definite proof” that Yevgeny Prigozhin was on board the plane which crashed, it “is highly likely that he is indeed dead”.

An early source indicated that the plane that was downed turned off its transponder and air defense systems mistook it for a hostile plane, resulting in the plane's loss. There are some penetrations of a couple of pieces of wreckage that look as though they could be from typical shrapnel created by an air defense missile, but some pieces do look remarkably unaffected. What is odd about it all is that two persons were reportedly onboard the plane for a duration of time, who remain unidentified, before the plane took off. Perhaps adding some credence to an FSB sabotage theory. On the other hand it seems quite incredible that Prigozhin would himself, given his recent circumstances, actually fly on the plane, with so many top Wagner leaders, that he was listed as flying on. He was typically much more paranoid and careful about exactly that type of risk. He was risk aware even before the Wagner rebellion incident. So why so unwary after it ? Also why would so many Wagner leaders be permitted, by Prigozhin, to fly on one airplane at the same time ? That too is quite incredible. Adding to the problem is the apparent lack of a definite successor. Surely Prigozhin would have appointed a successor in case something happened to Prigozhin. That successor, at least, not being allowed to fly on the same plane at the same time as Prigozhin over risky territory, and Russia certainly had become very risky territory subsequent to the exile of Prigozhin and Wagner to Belarus. So what does it all add up to ? It does not make much rational sense. Something is wrong with the entire scenario, but what and why remains a huge mystery.
