I'm an Engineer and we do the analyst duties too since there are no analysts where I work. Goes to show you how everything differs by organization.

I would start probably at security analyst to learn the ropes depending on what skill set level I've obtained from training; then along the way, learning real-world skills to evolve into a security engineer (but for your question, a security engineer sounds more rewarding)
