*Update: Pick Debt*

Something we didn't cover that could be very relevant to the 2020 draft is the concept of debt.
Essentially, if a team does not have enough points to match a bid, they are allowed to 'borrow' points from next year's draft. This will then bump down the position of a pick in next years draft, with the affected pick determined by the round they're matching the bid in.

For example: A team decides to match a bid at pick 22 (in the second round) but they don't have enough points left to pay for it, so they spend all their picks and incur 100 points worth of debt. Next year they finish 14th and get picks 6, 24, 42 & 60. As the debt was incurred in the second round, pick 6 is unaffected and 100 points are subtracted from pick 24, making it pick 28.

As a Yank that has watched the last couple drafts confused as hell, I truly appreciate the effort that went into this. Very helpful. Now I know how the Little Master's "Littler Master" gets to the Cats in 17 years. :)

Really great video! I had no idea how the draft worked before but this video was easy to follow and when it got more complicated it was broken down well. Was captivated for the entire 5:35 mins. Loving it all! 🧐🤯

For this years draft Ugle-Hagan will probably be bid for at 1. That means 3000 points subtract 25% so 2250 points will be required for the bulldogs to take him. Their picks add up to 1, 823 points so therefore 402 points will be taken off their first round pick next year. If they get pick 14 again next year for example that pick will go back to pick 25.

This is good bc right now I play for Aspley Hornets under 12s and my grandad said if I want to make it into the Brisbane Lions I need to go to Melbourne or Adelaide and get drafted to one of there teams and work from there

Father son rule may be unfair but it’s so unique to other spots that it’s the greatest rule in the game

Question: what happens when a team tries to match a bid, but doesn’t have the required amount of points?

Anyways, great vid guys, I finally understand the draft :) Looking forward to more.

Thanks heaps for explaining how the draft works I was aware that father and son draft however I was not aware that there father had to play 100games for that club to qualify that makes it better and that way you are more or less garenteed a quality player as no AFL player that has played 100 games is not good and there body must be able to endure the riggers of afl it's hard enough to play footy at club level let alone a professional clubs like VFL WAFL SANFL Im not sure what the Queensland football league is called but them as well as our biggest and greatest league the AFL in my opinion the best game in the world

So, what if in the Rioli example, Fremantle didn't want to give up that pick and allow him to go to Hawthorn. Could they simply select him themselves, saying "no thank you", or could they hold out for an even bigger return, maybe including a player?
