Показать описание
Piazza della Repubblica is a large circular piazza in Rome, next to the Termini Train Station and it is the place from where Via Nazionale, one of the main streets of Rome, starts. Piazza della Repubblica is the location of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and of the Martyrs (Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri), built in the 16th century, inside the ruined frigidarium (one of the three main bath chambers of a Roman bath or thermae) of the Roman Baths of Diocletian. The basilica dedicated to the Christian martyrs, was constructed following an original design by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The Fountain of the Naiads (Fontana delle Naiadi), located at the centre of the Piazza della Repubblica was completed in 1888, but its four bronze sculptures of Naiads by Mario Rutelli from Palermo, were added in 1901 replacing four plaster lions designed by Alessandro Guerrieri.
