You use a different hand each time you lift the right one from the left. So for my theory, these strings are somewhat tangled up to each other and when you pinch a side, it stops it from getting pulled.

They are indeed linked at the center and the strings that don't move are blocked by your fingers. It's a kinda simple contraption and if both bottom strings are free the one top string can get the length of both the bottom strings.

I've noticed you've had your fingers possibly holding something down on either side when you'd pull up the same side bottom string, but when you're not holding something down it moves the opposite side bottom string.
