Notice Mozart’s masterfully dramatic vocal part-writing throughout which aimed to re-cast the often ‘tiresome’ trochaic rhythm of the Latin text in the opening chorus of the Sequentia of his final composition (c. Late September through 2 December 1791) to make this chorus one of the most influential in western art music history and its ‘unfinished state’ gives us a glimpse into Mozart’s workshop and a hint as to the emergence of a new musical ‘liturgical stile’ that would have been evident in future works if he had lived for what we to-day would call ‘a normal lifespan’ as he had applied for the position of Kapellmeister of St Stephen’s in April 1791 whilst Georg Ruetter lay dying —but then recovered—so M. was appointed Vice-Kapellmeister of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna a few weeks before his death (the kapellmeister-organist Ruetter lived on until 1794 — which would have been the year that M. would have assumed the post to replace Georg Reutter had M. lived…
