Actually Ubar has been found - Using a combination of high-tech satellite imagery and old-fashioned literary detective work, they discovered the fortress city buried under the shifting sands of a section of Oman so barren that it is known as the Rub’al Khali or Empty Quarter. Using the imagery, the team was able to pick out the ancient trade routes, which were packed down into hard surfaces by the passage of hundreds of thousands of camels. Junctions where the trade routes converged or branched seemed likely locations for the lost city.

One of my Archeology professors . Juris Zarins of Southwest Missouri State University (and a few friends of mine) along with British explorer Sir Ranulf Fiennes conducted a dig on the site and there was also a short documentary about the excavation.

I wonder if they burned their settlements to the ground as a form of sanitisation. If they lived in large settlements for the time and probably more concentrated populations, disease and general filth could be cleaned up by a periodical burning/cleansing. Could explain the regularity of this act also, given no one would be alive to see a second burning. It was in their culture to do it when required so they knew of it as part of their traditions. And it happened within around the same periodical timeframes, every 60/80 years, as this was when it got to the stage where it needed to be carried out. I actually have no idea just a theory lol

hiya, Katrina! many early cultures mysteriously disappeared over the millenia. natural disasters, drought, war and mans natural sandy feet are some of the reasons. continued research and excavation may eventually answer some of the questions concerning these disappearances. support for archaeology is key to finding them.
