No words between Tod and Copper are ever exchanged again beyond this point, but just through their faces and gestures, you know exactly what’s happened between them. Their friendship isn’t restored to what it once was; they both went down different paths in life, but the love and respect between them is stronger than ever.

The look in amos's eyes when copper makes that whine, it's like he immediately understood what copper was trying to tell him. That killing tod won't solve the problems Amos had with Tod and that he's also copper's friend. Then Amos realizes that copper makes a good point and decides to give up his vendetta against Tod
And move on.

Tod and copper may not have rebuilt their friendship the way they would've, but no matter what they do in life, no matter where they are, they'll always be Friends.

I’m hoping they don’t do a live action remake of this because it’s perfect the way it is.

People say Amos Slade is a monster who cares for little but this shows that he cares for his dogs and that he realizes vengeance leads to nothing. Copper realizes his mistake and that he shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. Tod realizes that even despite all he cares for Copper. Both goes their separate ways and live happier lives. This movie is a masterpiece. They don't make them like this anymore.

A lot of people say this movie is really sad and to a degree it is, but I think it's much happier than people give it credit for because it's trying to tell you that real friendship will overcome all the differences, sorrows, and pain of life.

For what is true friendship if not overcoming all that pain? Sadness exists in this film yes, but it's only there to prove to use that love can overcome it. And that is a beautiful think we should all strive to remember.

Seeing this as a young boy, I say the same thing now as I did then:
THAT’S WHAT TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS ....

AND IT NEVER DIES.

Jesus, the series of facial expressions Slade goes through during this sequence. Damn, that is good storytelling. Same with Copper and Todd.

One of the most poignant moments in animation history. Love how everything just goes dead quiet, and just the pleaful whine... Beautiful.

Amos is one of few Disney villains to have some form of redemption rather than just being defeated. People say the movie would have been stronger if Chief ending up dying instead of just breaking his leg. and I have to agree with them since what happened to Chief was the driving force of Amos and Copper going to such extreme lengths to kill Todd, then this would have been the point where Amos realizes that killing Todd isn't gonna bring Chief back.

They may have gone their separate ways and their friendship can never return to what it once was. But the bond will always be there. I like that final touch of Copper pausing and turning back to look at Tod to make sure he's okay enough to be on his way.

I love how Amos resigns himself. Because he knows Copper saved his life, and Tod saved Copper. Thus, while it is small, he ultimately shows his gratitude by sparing Tod's life.

1:20 "bruh, I've really had beef with a fox all these years, maybe I do need to chill out"

Copper is like, “If you kill him, you’ll have to kill me too”. Just like in Pocahontas.

Amos may have a temper, but he’s not a bad guy. It’s pretty clear that he cares about his dogs and circumstances caused him to blame Tod for something no one can control. It was only after encountering that bear that he realized that his vengeance wasn’t helping. In a way, the villain of this movie is neither him nor the bear. Instead, it’s society and the natural order of things.

1:08 is an amazing example of how they capture emotion that smoothly fades from angry to realizing, before sympathetic.

Copper felt loyalty to his owner and to Chief and so of course had to pursue Todd after Chief was hurt. Amos was always after "that fox" and so finally the two could hunt him in solidarity. But here at the end, Copper realized that Todd wasn't his enemy even though they were natural enemies. But they were also childhood friends--best friends. Copper saved his owner's life and Todd saved his life and Chief was still alive. There was no reason to kill Todd after all. I think Copper's whine made Amos realize that too. They're both alive because Todd fought off a bear. I think Amos realized there was some history there--that there was a reason "that fox" was always near their house, though he assumed it was to get his chickens. Now he can see that there's clearly a bond between the two.

That's why I like the scene after this one, where just as Copper is about to drift off to sleep you see him smile as he remembers what he and Todd talked about as kids. His owner is being taken care of, Chief is back to his normal grumpy self, and he is alive at home. He didn't have to kill his best friend, and they no longer will have that obligation to pursue Todd. It's just something of the past now, and Copper can be content thinking fondly of their memories knowing his best friend is out there somewhere living a proper fox life while he lives on too.

Can just appreciate how bloody BRILLIANT the animation is? How the FLAWLESS emotional expressions are HAND DRAWN?! INSANE. WHERE IS THIS TALENT TODAY!?

Copper coming over to protect Tod is just amazing, the animation is identical to real life movement of a dog, PERFECTLY CAPTURED, tail stuck between his legs, head and ears pulled down, the eyes upwards, all of which examples a dogs submissive and scared position, then the whine, incredible. I've seen dogs literally do this when their owner is yelling at another dog and they come in to protect them this way, when i was a kid i was in trouble and my mom was yelling at me, my dog just smoothly and slowly stepped between me and mom, standing and looking at her scared with his puppy eyes wanting to protect me 😭
