Transform and Shape your Cylinder into an Orb Vase || Dig, Open, Pull Series BONUS EPISODE

Welcome to the BONUS EPISODE of this three-part series on beginner-friendly pottery wheel throwing techniques. This bonus episode will cover how to shape a thrown cylinder into an orb vase / moon jar on the pottery wheel. The video covers two main shaping techniques: using fingers and a wooden rib. It emphasizes keeping the top of the cylinder centered while focusing on expanding the middle third to create the orb shape. I go over how to use both fingers and the rib to push the clay outwards gradually, supporting the outer wall with the opposite hand. The video also covers techniques like fingertip pulls to add height and shape the shoulder and rim of the piece, as well as finishing techniques using a metal rib and a shammy. Finally, it shows how to remove excess clay at the base using a wooden knife and wire.

Interesting way to do this, can’t say it’s super effective. One of the ideas of shaping is to have it uniform and not out of round. I have never seen when using a rib inside that there isn’t one on the outside to keep the shape. The orbs are much more round like a basketball and are usually shaped at much slower speed. As per the norm there isn’t any real wrong way for pottery. But I found it odd that you said to make sure the top stays even and round or it throws the whole thing off which is true, yet the whole demo the top was very uneven and showed how one side was thicker than the other due to it being shaped and pulled uneven.
