In George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, Mr. Balanchine uses Act II to introduce Clara and the Prince to foods and flavors from distant lands. Each food is represented through the dancers. This dance represents coffee from Arabia, hence it's name: Arabian Coffee. Ian Falconer's costume design was inspired by the Maurice Sendak version - they both emulate a peacock.

Performed by corps de ballet dancer Cecilia Iliesiu.

I miss the peacock, but this dance is still one of my favorites

The most wonderful performance! Especially with my grandaughter of my heart in the role of Clara and my other grandaughter of my heart as a poinchinelle! I actually was fortunate to see it twice during my visit to Seattle!

The costume is gorgeous but the jingles are really distracting

I know everyone involved; the dancers, directors, choerographers, stage hand, lighting etc put in a ton of work, but hate how it replaced the version I loved and wanted to see live, but I was young and couldn't go to. The one from Stowell and Sendak, with it's own somber vibe, this one just feels like all others.

It's really too bad what the new peacock costume looks like. It's missing the edge and originality of the Sendak design. I hope one day they'll revive Stowell and Sendak.
