Do Disney Sequels Count as Canon Material?

For the sake of this channel, I want to take a public stand on the direct-to-video Disney sequels, and explain why I often ignore them when analyzing movies.

Bambi 2 and Lion King 2 are extremely high quality for low budget direct to video sequels. Like them or not, you can't deny that they were obviously extreme passion projects and are full of nothing but love and respect for the original.

I just want to say that I LOVE Bambi II so so much! It is super cute but also has it's serious moments and the team actually put a lot of hard work into it. I consider it a canon mid-quel.

I consider sequels cannon unless they conflict with the original, then they are axed out of cannon for me. Like for example: Lion king 2 featured Simba's cub and added to the established lore while being it's own story. Cannon. Fox and the hound 2 took baby Todd and baby Copper and stuck them in this weird singing group during a time when they were supposed to have not seen each other for many seasons. Not cannon. Bambi 2 focused on a time of Bambi's life that we don't know anything about and gave him some fleshing out that allows us to understand the original a little better. Cannon. Mulan 2's characters were nothing like their original counterparts and anyone who loved the original would know those characters would never act that way. Not cannon. I go on a case by case basis, but T.V shows are in my opinion always non cannon. They have their own set of rules.

Id say Bambi 2 is one of the better ones as it deals with things from the book. Thought the time lines are off. eg Rono was already a young adult when bambi was young, And bambi in the book was a young adult when he first heard the hunter calling, then he thought it was faline as it was the breeding season, and the Prince saved him by making him walk and see the truth instead of charging in. I really wish Disney would do a true to the book live action Bambi, YES it would be dark as anything. But it would be a nice break for all the cute and singing.

I think it honestly all depends on the movies canon's material and quality to show what's canon and what's not. Like, i believe the higher quality the lighting the more i think a certain sequel is canon. Lion King II has good writing, is it canon? Yeah. Hunchback II is a awful mess but is it canon? Nope. Almost like, consider canon which sequels Disney clearly put more attention into so to speak. I mean i consider Little Mermaid's II writing good but i mean i see a lot of people hate that one yet i love it haha.

Depends which sequal. I liked the Lilo and Stitch sequels. And a few others.

I grew up with Home on the Range and I loved that movie! My mom said "All you wanted to watch was Cows Cows Cows!"

To me Dismey sequels are hit or miss. I enjoyed (and still do enjoy) the Aladdin sequels (even though the animation quality dropped), Lady and the Tramp 2, Bambi 2, the Lilo and Stitch sequels, and Return to Neverland.

Honesty Bambi 2 was one of my favorite sequel simply because along with actually having a purpose in fleshing out a part of life of these characters we never saw it didn't try to ruin the first one the way Fox and The Hound 2 did. I liked seeing Bambi's father, I like seeing the struggle of Bambi adjusting to no longer having a parent, the fact that his father was not meant to raise him and now has to perfectly shows the struggle of a child going through such critical change in their life. Fox and the hound two though..was a disgrace in every sense of the word.

I’m confused about why no one mentions Return to Neverland as one of the better Disney sequels! It’s obvious that a lot of hard work was put into making that movie!

I agree with you 100% about the sequels. When a sequel is faithful to the original source, cohesive and well done, like The Lion King 2, I consider it Canon. When a movie directly contradicts the source material, doesn't make sense and poorly represents the world and characters (*cough Ariel's Beginnings), it is just Disney certified non-canon fanfic.

i consider them canon unless its a paradox lie the Cinderella movies: the second one is a bunch of shorts one showing Anastasia dating that cute baker and becoming closer to Cinderella by the end we are led to think her and the baker would live happily ever after. But then Cinderella 3 a twist in time Shows Anastasia still with her family, no boyfriend, and jealous of Cinderella leading her to go back in time. its a contradiction. Monster university is also a contradiction because in the first movie Mike said they knew each other since elementary school

what if these personal relationships Ariel has gets pushed away by an external force i.e urchin and the deaf mermaid fall out of touch with Ariel. so then she is left with just flounder, her treasure hunting and teachings from scuttle. yes the little mermaid is a love story however Ariel was already interested in the surface before she sees Eric on his boat. her wanting Eric gives her the motivation to see out her fantasys because she now has a reason beyond her curiosity to go see this world she's dreamed of for most of her life

YOU ARE AWESOME!!! The only sequels I think are good are the Aladdin sequels, The Lion King sequels, and the Little Mermaid sequels. I don't even know why they tried to make the rest.

I think the Buzz Lightyear cartoon was supposed to exist in the Toy Story universe and be a show that Buzz was a toy for like with Woody with Woody's Round Up. I think Pixar even made a short with the toys putting in a VHS of the show which confirmed it.

To be honest i prefer lion king 2 over lion king because i like zira better as a villain. I found her to be more threatening
