NOSTALGHIA (1983) - Final Scene

Показать описание
At a spa in the Tuscan Hills, a Russian poet and musicologist, researching the life of an 18th century composer, meets a mysterious man who is convinced that the end of the world is nigh. The Russian, Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovsky), is asked to cross an ancient sulphur pool carrying a lighted candle as an act of faith. Tarkovsky's first film outside the USSR is full of personal and Christian symbols and works as a study of such themes as memory, melancholia and disenchantment with the material world.

Astonishing work. I am from Tuscany and I have never seen before or since a foreign director capturing so well the atmosphere of these rural areas before.

The most powerful scene ever. Human life in 12 minutes.

While I have never seen the rest of this film, the 9 minute shot that comprises a majority of this film I feel is somehow a masterpiece of cinematography and I just dont understand why I feel that way, if someone was to describe this scene to me, "A very quiet, nearly 10 minute long shot that has no spoken words or music, with a very bland colouration and a guy slowly walking with a lit candle for the duration of it" I'd tell you the person that made it was a fool but watching this shot it is absolutely brilliant and I love it more than pretty much any other scene in cinema but the reason to me is incomprehensible. Maybe it taps into something so deeply ingrained in my (and from the look of the comments, a good many people's) humanity. I don't know but I do know that I will never forget this scene.

No one made/makes movies like Tarkovskij. All his movies are masterpieces and this movie is one of the best ever made IMHO

I just saw the remastered Nostalghia at SIFF in a packed theater. After this scene as the film closed, you could hear a pin drop. It was really i teresting tonfeel the weight of these long, silent shots in a theater with other people.

Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

I think this still stands as the most astonishing cinematographic sequence ever made.

In every back and forth we have time to think over more, how naive we think we can start from beginning but it's impossible, at first he reminded me sisyphus
