Andrei has traveled to Italy to research the life of a famous Russian composer. While there, a sense of isolation and ennui wracks his body and his mind. His translator, Eugenia, guides him through Italy but cannot solve his loneliness. His despair. He does not know what to do about it or even truly why it has infected him. He meets a man of great faith and possible mental illness – Domenico. Andrei's travels through Italy show him the different forms of loneliness and isolation among the people there. In meeting these people, he hopes to discover the source of his own loneliness. Eugenia travels to a convent in the Tuscan countryside to show Andrei the frescoes by Piero della Francesca. At the last minute, Andrei decides not to go inside. Alone, she finds the sacristan and asks him why women are more devout than men. Why are women, she believes, more willing to devote their lives to God?
The sacristan avoids the question at first but eventually relents, claiming he is only a simple man and believes that women exist to produce children. Offended, Eugenia asks if that is her entire worth, but the sacristan dodges the question further.

Discovering Tarkovsky opens up a whole new way of approaching film, at least it did for me. :)

I don't understand how all Tarkovsky films are so simplicticly beautiful??

i dunno about y’all, but the dog barking upsets me far more than domineco lighting himself on fire in that scene...

I do find it hard to understand a Tarkovsky film. I do adore them all and some are my all time favourites but some like this I don’t find difficult and this video really helped me to understand it further

Very profound understanding of this great piece of art! But with every Tarkovsky film, the viewer gets a different view-point each time one watches the film again. But yes, the deep melancholy becomes deeper with each view

The man in the church says something along the lines of the nurturing aspect of women not so much that women are just meant to have children

This 7 minute précis was more satisfying than the actual film.

I think i understood a lot from this movie and i felt it bad.my opinion is that the technology has make us more closer the one to another but we can communicate from distance text etc but we are peoole actually made comminucation meaningless you can spend so mich time seeing things and communicate and the only thing yoi actually do is killing your time in a world of nonsense i think that before technology if you can visualize it the communiacation was different more hard and more unique too. Also i think that loneliness is something that we always the human race had and always will be nowadays in the world of communication which everything is easier and faster they made the loneliness as something bad but no matter what the human will always feel lonely and if not i think he don't really lives the all the answers is inside us our soul is inside us without loneliness everything would be nonsense i think but it is hard to understand it if you don't have yourself if you don't know who you are if you didn't isolate yourself to become who you want to become then what you are doing with your life??my opinion...

I wish Tarkovsky viewed women the way you do. He explicitly wrote and said that a woman's purpose is self-abnegation and self-humiliation out of love.
