BMCC6K Full Frame ROLLING SHUTTER TEST vs BMPCC6K | 6K Open Gate vs 4K S35

Since a lot of people asked me, in this video I quickly tested the rolling shutter on the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Full frame (BMCC6K) in both 6K open gate and 4K S35. I also tested the original BMPCC6K rolling shutter so you guys have something to compared it to. This is not a scientific test and of course these are not real world scenarios. In facts I've never had an issue with my original BMPCC6K when it comes to real work with paid clients. However, I do understand that some people that shoot fast moving objects might need a better rolling shutter for their line of work.

the footage only looks jiggly to me when you jiggle it. if people don't want this look they should not jiggle their cameras 😂

I guess everyone has forgotten that this is a camera that is $2500 and does full frame in 6k raw! Its like we all want the world but want to spend peanuts.

Thanks for the test Matteo, but as you've said no one would pan like this on a real job most of the the time, but it's a good reference.

While panning like that virtually never happens, slow rolling shutter can be a pain with shaky handheld, especially if VFX/Tracking involved, I know i've suffered a lot with the P4K in those scenarios. It'd be cool to see if the gyro stab does cancel the RS, like it virtually does on the other pockets.

Oh not great then. :(
Thanks for the video!
Was the one thing I really wanted to see!

Woosh, worst than expected, too bad.
FF with a sub 12ms rolling shutter would be great, please BM, make a more expensive model :)

Rolling shutter is not an issue for objects "bending" in fast motion, it's an issue when your actors' heads are being deformed because of handheld footage (yes, I've actually encountered this). I don't want "global shutter, " I want readout that's fast enough to make rolling shutter a non-issue in extreme handheld cases. If I have to worry about it shooting open gate, then it's an issue. I noticed horrible rolling shutter in one of the BMCC6K promotion videos (when they're shooting in the car) that literally made it look amateurish

Not bad for FF at this price point! I’m impressed.

Still rocking the bmpcc4k and original 6k. Gotta add this one to the roster.

New sensor looks fire, can’t wait to get it in the bigger bodies and see how they somehow even step it up for the ursa. Shame they skipped the NDs it seems? Surely many users would have paid the extra price as it was insanely well received on the pocket pro.

And awesome that Blackmagic did finally recognize your brand loyalty and effort! You deserve it!

Better than expected. If they can bump the price up to $3k and get that readout speed to 10ms this camera would be tough to beat

You got typo in the title: Sould be BMCC6K not BMPCC6K

Good upgrade, but seriously many of us would rather pay 2-3k more for better rolling shutter, a internal ND(like the one from the canon c70) and a box style form factor. It would be still much cheaper than the Komodo while having BRAW.

Could the the gyro stabilization inside DaVinci Resolve possibly fix the rolling shutter artifacts completely? I am curious to try it out. Matteo, is it possible for you to share a small clip (braw) of this rolling shutter video?

Reminds me of my old A7s. Yeah its bad rolling shutter performance, but I have literally never cares about rolling shutter even on my okd a7s, never understood why people acted like its such a big deal. Its only an issue that nitpicky filmmakers will care about, the general audience watching your video will not care.

Uff that's a lot of rolling shutter there... 😢

No need to defend it, these are quite bad values for rolling shutter.
6048x4032 - 25.08ms
6048x3200 - 19.90ms
4096x2160 - 15.13ms
How many people film sport and/or on long enough lenses for this to become an issue, is something that can be discussed (handheld skills are each one's responsibility instead), but these are bad numbers.
Let's see how much it will sell. I think for my next camera after all my pocket 4k, 6k and 6k pro, I will wait for this sensor to be put in an Ursa Mini and improved, or simply get the 12k. After all, it's just 1.3 crop. With this dslr form factor, for what I need it always becomes longer and heavier than a Ursa Mini, it doesn't make sense.

Great test as usual, Matteo.
Will you compare the image quality and low light capabilities between the BMPCC 6K 2/BMPCC 6K Pro and the BMCC 6k full frame?

It's better than I thought, expecially the open gate. Thanks!

it doesnt look too bad with subtler movements? Thanks for sharing Matteo

Hi Matteo. I've personally tested the latitude on the Pocket 6k Pro and once uploaded to Davinci Resolve, I got 9.3 stops above middle gray at ISO 800. I obviously lowered the ISO in post, saved the settings under DR wide gamut, graded with HDR wheels, and highlight recovery. I've been really impressed by how many stops above middle gray I'm able to pull. Hopefully this camera does at least the same, and perhaps better in clean shadows
