Again I say that the real secret sauce for EV adoption isn't fast charging, but slow charging. Make the availability of slow charging so common that it's ubiquitous. The average car spends 96% of its time parked, and more so in dense cities with good mass Transit. If it's parked then it should be plugged in.

Fast charging in the city? Why? Would have been better with 50 000 11kWh slow chargers instead.

I bought a KIA Niro and installed an Emporia 240V charger in my suburban garage. It is wonderful to own. EV adoption in the U.S. is being driven by people from the suburbs. People in cities who park on the street can't do that, and this will enable them to do it. I hope this succeeds because they are going to love having an EV in the city. Less noise and pollution, and they will save a lot of money.

That's not beating Tesla, that is joining them in their mission of speeding the transition to renewables. The more chargers the better!

I like the 'tree' but for overnight charging in residential areas, much lower charging rates required. Reduce capital cost and install more chargers over a wider area.

As a Tesla driver I say, "more power to 'em". Not many cars yet can take advantage of 500kW, but hey, more is better.

500 kw charging on a residential street makes zero sense. Long-term parking needs L1 (hours) not L3 (minutes).

The wiring infrastructure cannot carry the load demand. It looks ugly too.

That is absolutely great. Gonna look Gravity up. Support the build out.

Gravity seems like a very interesting company! There are lots of companies solving these edge-case EV charging issues.
Thanks for reporting on this!

Good luck getting city permits to tear up the sidewalks and medians before installation…and then working with the utility for grid connections.

A good idea but they look an eyesore if the picture your showing is anything to go by

Whoever is writing the checks at Google can pass out blank checks but that won't make utilization equipment manufacturers increase transformer production.

They better figure out a way to make the cables theft-proof, because the new "sport" is cutting off the charging cables to "recycle" the copper.

We still need real charging stations that are just like gas stations. Travelers need the store, an attendant to report issues to, air pumps for tires, bathrooms, windshield washer tools, etc. Why did anyone ever think that just because you drive an EV you don't need all those things? Not only that but the store is the only reason gas stations can stay in business they simply can't make enough off the gas. The same is true for charging, the business model has to be the same as gas stations.

In the last 7 or 8 years how often have we heard company XYZ "plans to"... to beat Tesla? And how many have actually come up with the goods? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for anything that helps the uptake of EVs, but I will believe it when I see it. Having a 500kW charger is nice, but how many vehicles can charge at that rate?

Alex-kwkb

I suppose it is like a decentralized fueling... pull over at side of street with one of these fast chargers.... take what you need in a few minutes and be on your way. But how will they monitor a vehicle taking up the space without using the charger? Most city drivers of any car value the parking spot at the expense of blocking an EV from charging in it.

About time too! Elon has always wanted others to get involved. Healthy competitions.

Something about this story doesn't make sense. Fast charging along freeways certainly makes sense. But you need L1 charging at apartment buildings, restaurants and malls. Something isn't right here.

TrendyStone

The picture shows an obvious problem: 1 car parked in front of a multi-story apartment building. There can never be enough chargers for that unless you have a multi-story parking garage with charging stations. People will be fighting for charging spaces on the street. People will remain plugged in after they are fully charged, etc.
