Who is the Canon C100 MKii for? (2023)

The C100 mkii is an amazing camera for the right person. It's amazing for people who do live events or documentaries. If you're doing weddings or jobs where you need gimbals, this isn't the best option. Also if you need something that shoots 4k then best to look at cheaper alternatives from other brands.

This video was shot on the Canon R6 with the Sigma 24-70mm and the Canon XA55.

I have 3 C100mkii's and have been part of a number of livestreams and never had any problem apart from when using the older Blackmagic hardware as opposed to newer Atem's...the older hardware sees the files as 1080i and won't do a conversion so had to use a Decimator in the HDMI line to do the conversion before the signal reaches the switcher...the Atem Mini Pro does the conversion internally. I use my C100's for interviews, live streamed events, coverage of art and musical events (opera, concerts etc.)...so easy to set up, so reliable, good battery life if needed (most of my event and interview shooting I'm using the 240v power adapters), ND filters come in real handy, good audio with 2 XLR inputs - I use the Deity Connect system for interviews so good quality audio into camera so no syncing in post, small files sizes while still retaining good picture quality...love 'em!

Don't forget it does have a seperate dial just for iris/aperfture, as well as 6-stop ND filter built in...

I guess it is all relative, but I think of this as a great low-light video camera. I have two of them, used mainly for documentary, interviews, live events, gun & run. It depends on what you compare it to in dedicated video cameras. There's no absolute requirement for cages, XLR audio preamps, extra monitors, etc. And you can easily push it to 3200 ISO with minimal trade-off in image quality if necessary. For me, the pros far outweigh the cons in terns of usability.

I'm part of the C100 M2 cult and still shoot with it in 2023 - just a great feature set, reliable, insane great battery life, tiny, gradable files. I'm not quite ready to go 4K yet for the work I do and this camera still delivers for my needs. Didn't know about the interlaced streaming problem - thanks - that sucks!

I used this camera for about 6 or 7 years as my A-cam. It's a dream to use. There are very inexpensive generic AC power adapters that have been reliable for me. Also, I'm not sure I agree it is "not great" in low light. Compared to what? An A7S3? It's still up there when it comes to low light, especially if paired with fast lenses, and the EF mount allows for some fast lenses.

I've moved on to using the C70 and R6 as my main cams, but I still greatly miss the ability to shoot with the C100mk2's EVF jammed u to my eye.

I use my c100 mk ii with atomos ninja 2. You have to set output to 30p HDMI and it will get rid of interlaced signal. Else eternal 1080p 60 to SD card.

Another C100 convert! I gotta say though, with a fast enough lens it's certainly good in low light. I have this great clip I could send you that I shot in Colorado at night in keystone and it was only lit by a fireplace and it just looks pristine. I'll also say, using the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 exclusively on that camera for about 5 years, I found myself only needing to be at like 2.8 or 4 with all 6 stops of ND on and it still looks incredible, but even so I was at 1.8 quite a bit. That DC port is a nightmare though it'll wiggle loose SO easily. I had a cage for it that had power included so I ran into that problem far less but still, it's a toughie. Normally I suggested that cage but these days I'd say find a battery-to-Dtap adapter instead of the barrel. Also definitely get OWLCOLOR ;)

How was the auto focus for you ? Ive heard a lot of reviews saying the Auto Focus on the c100mk2 and c200 are not usable.
Im looking to get into Sports Videography. Im primarily coming for 10 years of Weddings and Music Videos.

I believe you can change the 1080 HDMI output to 59.94P vs 59.54i in the settings.

Still a great camera! What's crazy is that it has a 4K sensor that's down-res'd to 1080. (It's the same sensor as the C300) Magic Lantern was poised to hack the firmware but Canon threatened to sue the living pants off 'em.

Really nice overview. I just got a used c100 mk1 for the purpose of live broadcast together with my zcam e2s6 and lumix s5. I have tha Atomos atomx cast as well as my switcher and program out to obs (if i do live broadcasting/streaming). Have not tested as yet but have you gotten your c100 to record satisfactorily to the ninja atomx cast and/or stream to OBS without the artifacts issues? Btw, keep up the good work.

Just bought mine and it will be here tomorrow. Got it for 600 and might become my A camera. Use the Bmpcc 4K and R7 for video.

If you record at 60fps the hdmi will output 60p.

I would never buy an overpriced Canon branded battery. Just bought a second BP975 from Amazon for £54. It is exactly the same as a Canon one but with the Cellonic name on it.

After checking Reddit- the C100 mark i looks more cinematic and less digital. With Mark ii, I believe Canon stopped the analog film look (C100, 1DC, C300 mark i).
