Vietnamese Egg Coffee Recipe (Easy home recipe) 🍳 ☕
You can easily make this at home if you have a Vietnamese coffee filter called Phin.
To make 1 cup of Vietnamese egg coffee you just need:
- 3 teaspoons of coffee,
- 2 egg yolks
- 3 teaspoons of condensed milk
Equipment
Steps
1. First, take off the inner lid inside the phin (coffee filter). Scoop in the ground coffee and place the lid back on top.
2. Pour just a little hot water into the filter to soak the coffee for 30 seconds and let them expand slightly.
3. Pour the hot water into the phin until almost full. Let the coffee drip.
4. Meanwhile, separate the egg yolk from the whites. Spoon the condensed milk into the same bowl as the yolks. Mix and beat them until they become slightly foamy and well combined.
5. Pour the egg yolk mixture on to a spoon, and into the coffee cup. The spoon will help form two layers. Enjoy!
This egg coffee drink was originally made during the period of World War 2 where there was a shortage of milk. Then, Vietnamese coffee shops creatively substituted milk with a combination of egg yolk with sugar or condensed milk.
Raw egg yolk by itself has a bit of strange taste - Creamy yet savoury - but when combined with condensed milk, you get a thick and sweet concoction that pairs perfectly with the strong and bitter Vietnamese Robusta coffee.
