13:51 That's the great thing about the Indonesian nation, all tribes/ethnicities/races in our country, when in public places including malls, always speak Indonesian as a unifying language, and none of the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia use their ancestral language in their daily interactions. This is very different from Malaysian and Singaporeans who in public places all speak their ethnic language. Btw, enjoy the journey. 🇮🇩👍🔥🌹❤️

I like it when you're curious about Indonesia history. Indonesian language is not just a tool of communication but also as a unifying tool. In 1928, there's a youth congress called "Youth Pledge" that held by varied backgrounds of representatives. They came up with the ideas that they will use Indonesian language as a 'lingua franca' that unifies all ethnicities, races, and tribes in Indonesia to live in harmony. It's in line with our motto "unity in diversity". Hope you enjoy your trip here😁

This train looks so cool! We did a 7-hour road (train?) trip from Bandung to Jogja before. The prettier the view the worse the internet connection though 😅

and the fact is that our brothers and sisters of Chinese descent do not want to be considered or even called Chinese. they want to still be considered Indonesian because their grandfather, grandmother, mother and father were born and raised in Indonesia...
Traditional Chinese language according to our brothers, they say that Chinese is only used at home and in their community. and the generation that uses it a lot are those who are older. and there is also a unique thing where some of them are very fluent in the local language too... basically the culture and various languages in Indonesia are very unique...

Glad you enjoyed panoramic train and scenery along the journey to Bandung. Actually most of young educated Indonesians who life in big cities in the archipelago at least can speak in 3 languages, bahasa indonesia, understand english, and local language. You are both smart travelers, enjoy your day.

All trains in Indonesia use air conditioning, even the lowest class (economy). Panoramic trains usually pass through the South Java Line, because the hilly contours there provide beautiful and breathtaking views. The recommended route is Bandung, Garut and towards Jogja.

For the prohibition of Chinese language and culture, in the past the Chinese were told to choose citizenship to join Indonesia or return to China, and the majority chose to settle in Indonesia. And the Chinese who settled in Indonesia are more proficient in local languages and Bahasa Indonesia, even until now. For us, Bahasa Indonesia is the unifying language and lingua franca, not only for the Chinese, but for the various ethnicities living in Indonesia. You may notice that Indonesia consists of hundreds of ethnicities, and each ethnicity has its own language, imagine if there was no Bahasa Indonesia, how many dozens of languages we would have to master just so we could communicate with our brothers and sisters, although maybe some of us are polyglots especially if our parents come from different ethnicities.
