Everything is much clearer with Russian society. I was stunned by one statistic: A 15-year-old Russian boy today has the same life expectancy as a 15-year-old boy in Haiti.

Back in 2019—before covid and the invasion of Ukraine—the WHO estimated that a 15-year-old boy from Russia could expect to live another 53.7 years—less than a boy from Yemen, Mali, and South Sudan. Life expectancy for a boy of the same age in Switzerland is 13 years longer.

Education usually correlates with good health, but not in Russia.

Eberstadt notes that, satrikingly, Russia is a "first world" country with a "first world" level of education and a "fourth world" mortality rate for its working-age population.

Now in Russia there are as many patents issued in a year as in the state of Alabama alone, despite the fact that its population is 30 times larger.

What explains all this?

In a new book by scholar Alexander Etkind, Russia Against Modernity, Putin is said to have created a parasitic state that derives its income from the extraction of natural resources, and not from any creative production. It does not perform any of the functions of a modern state in terms of ensuring the well-being of its people.

Corruption is inherent in this kleptocratic regime, writes Etkind, noting that post-Soviet Russia is experiencing the fastest increase in inequality in the world.

For the Putin regime, the West now represents forces of social, economic and political modernization that can "infect" Russia.

And so he stands for traditional Russia, which glorifies religion, traditional morality, xenophobia and strict gender conformity.

Russia's biggest problem is not that it is losing the war in Ukraine, but that it is losing the 21st century.
