Nintendo Selects For Nintendo Switch: Why Hasn't It Happened Yet?

Nintendo used to sell a budget line of their older titles called Nintendo Selects. These were games that was sold for $59.99, brought down to $19.99, they was available for the Wii, 3DS and Wii U, but this is making Nintendo fans wondering, Could Nintendo Selects come to Nintendo Switch, with some of the older switch titles. Could we see this for the switch 2 , or even in a Nintendo Direct soon.

$60 for games that came out ages ago is insane

This is the sad reality: Nintendo doesn't need to. It's true that it would give them even more sales but I think because the next Switch is also going to be backwards compatible, they see no need for Nintendo Selects any more. The games sell well enough as they are.

It's a shame for some of us who have been around since the start of the Switch life, because there are some Nintendo games I want but don't really want to shell out £50+ for them...

I hate how nintendo realized people will pay full price for repackaged games with barely anything changed.
Seeing Wii games like SkywardSword and DKC be sold for more then their original price, or having games like DK TROPICAL FREEZE: NEW FUNKY MODE not only costing $60 but ALSO being out of physical print it seems??? Like it's so annoying because we know they'll do it if it isn't developed by themselves, IE. Metroid Prime was 40 bucks

I just got a switch a couple weeks back, finally got around to it haha. Thought I would score a bunch of cheap games but went to gamestop and saw 59.99 new 56.99 used I almost fainted

The fact that you could get Pikmin 3, Tropical Freeze or 3D World for around €20 was actually insane looking back. I would gladly pay €100 for a game as good as Pikmin 3, so to sell it for that feels like i'm robbing something 😂

this is why I find it hard to support nintendo or want to buy their consoles after the 3ds era. I'm not going to pay $50 for a 5 year old game

Nintendo has been super greedy this console generation and I feel like it’s really shown lately with like Luigi’s Mansion 2. Here’s how I think the pricing of some Switch titles SHOULD’VE BEEN FROM THE START:
- Wii U Games At $50: I get it that the Wii U didn’t really have a long generation and it didn’t ever get a chance to shine and neither did its games but it’s kind of ridiculous that they charged $10 more for the same games. Looking at like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze it’s like okay that game was only 4 years old so any price drop for it seems greedy for the fanbase and it feeds into the whole idea of games losing value immediately. But why was it $10 more? The Funky Mode Update should’ve been an update to counteract the depreciation in the value of the game over 4 years. If anything that update should’ve been even a little bit bigger! But if that game was re-released for the switch, still 4 years later at the same $50 but they added an update I think that would’ve been very fair! With that being said, even after that it’s still unfair for the people who own it on the Wii U to have to pay $50 for an update. So I think on top of releasing these games at $50 on Switch opposed to $60 they should’ve made it so that off of your Wii U you can lose the rights to the digital version or make the physical disc invalid and not let you play for a game and in exchange for giving up the game on the Wii U you get a 50% discount for the game digitally on the Nintendo Switch. So not worth it if you don’t buy the game but looking at it like if you have the Switch version of Tropical Freeze you aren’t gonna play the original anymore and paying $25 for the small update and the convenience of having it on your Switch doesn’t seem so bad. Some Games that fit into this $60->$50 are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker($40->$30), New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Bayonetta 2, LEGO City Undercover($30->$20),
And then I think the exception is Super Mario 3D World+Bowser’s Fury and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and I think both are self-explanatory but a good middle-ground for this is that they both launch at $60 but after exactly a year they get discounted to $50 each.
- OldER Games At $40: There are a few select games that are ridiculous prices. Luigi’s Mansion 2 is a 3DS game that is now raised to $60 and all they did was make it HD pretty much. Donkey Kong Country: Returns HD, a game that hasn’t even released and people have already noticed downgrades in some areas, is now at $60! This game was $50 when it first released on the Wii. When it got brought over as Returns 3D on the 3DS they even sliced it down to $40! It was put on Nintendo Selects Line and dropped down once again and you could get it for just $25 on the 3DS eShop! And then they decide to put it at $60?! This is insane! Going from the Wii to the 3DS, they discounted the game by $10 due to its depreciation and then they added an easy ‘new’ mode as well as a brand new level for each world theming which pretty much was making a brand new world to compensate for the game being graphically inferior. How can they have done all that not too many years ago and now Nintendo is saying to increase the game by $20 and pretty much do nothing! Like Emulators can do this same job Nintendo! And I get that they do still want to capitalize on people who have heavy nostalgia as well as people who haven’t ever played these games but like cmon man! N the whole thing with Nintendo in the Wii era is that they believe consoles are already becoming super powerful so they are focusing on accessibility to the fans and just overall fun! How can you charging more for an old game be focusing on accessibility?!! So, I think a little middle-ground is to have them priced like the perfect Metroid Prime Remastered. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, and Donkey Kong Country: Returns HD should all be priced from $60->$40. Like Nintendo had it so cool with Metroid Prime Remastered! That game sold decently well considering there was like no advertising and it was released the same day it was announced! And that’s because it was only $40! I just hope we get Metroid Prime 2 & 3 Remastered both for $40 and maybe a bundle of all three for $100 and Nintendo will see that they should have some titles standing at $40 beside the $60 titles.
And that’s the two biggest headlines for me! Some other small things are like Mario Vs. DK should’ve been $40 as well as it was a GBA game remake, Super Mario RPG should’ve been $50 as a SNES remake unless if it actually had some new content, Mario Kart Booster Course Pass shouldve been a little bit cheaper at like $20 because it’s a bunch of phone game courses, maybe even $15, Tears of the Kingdom should be $60 not $70, unless of course if they are gonna make it so all cross-gen games that have a version for both Switch and Super Switch/Switch 2 are $70 but it’s a free upgrade and data transfer between the two editions which I think would be cool but then again I feel like Nintendo should be a generation behind with increasing the prices because if they stayed at $60 when everyone else is at $70 getting close to $80 then people would find Nintendo as a great budget option! Like having the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers as a permanent option I think is incredible! If they really leaned into those that would be cool. Make them so that they aren’t forced for Nintendo Online members only. You can buy them if you don’t own an NSO Membership and they can be boughten as like gift cards in grocery stores with each voucher being it’s own card! They have now Bronze and Silver Vouchers. The Bronze Vouchers are valid for $40 and $50 games and they cost $80 for 2 of them and the Silver Vouchers are for $50 and $60 games at $100 for 2 of them. And then in like a year when they have a couple cross-gen games between the Switch and Super Switch like I think Tears of the Kingdom and Metroid Prime 4 are definite they could do Gold Vouchers which can be used for $60 and $70 games and they cost $120 for 2. So they each offer a base game price and then an option that’s $10 more and if you get the $10 more ones then you save money! Bronze vouchers expire after 2 years, Silver Vouchers expire after 3 years, and Gold Vouchers don’t expire until 4 years which also brings a little more value to each of them! And then maybe you can even purchase them in 4 packs and save even more! Bronze 4 pack is $150 so $37.50/game instead of $40. Silver 4 pack is $187.5 so ≈$46.88 instead of $50. Gold 4 Pack is $225 so $56.25/game instead of $60. Looking at each game it’s like okay so I save like $3.75 but think about the grand scheme of things it’s like you just saved $15 yknow and they don’t even have to offer 4 packs! It could also be good for like a family the mom can buy a four pack and give each kid one! Or like with Nintendo Online it is just not very worth it whatsoever! You should be able to buy all of these games! NES for $2.99, SNES for $4.99, GameBoy for $2.99, GBA for $4.99, Genesis for $5.99, N64 for $7.99 maybe $9.99, and if they add Game Cube next 9.99 or $11.99 if N64 is $9.99. Instead of Nintendo Online offering them for free, the basis makes the original free ones be 50% off and then the Expansion Pass/Premium NSO makes the other ones be 50% off and maybe when Game Cube is added it’s not included in either. And we could actually value buying these games since Nintendo should start doing the same backwards compatibility and eShop across all generations! And NSO should have some other perks instead of relying as a retro service as while people like me love it it isn’t very open to everyone! And the Expansion Pack should be double the price at $40 a year not $50.
I think they could be a lot more kind to the community but I think I’m fine if they don’t do Nintendo Selects since it will devalue each game because what I like about Nintendo is that they keep games pretty high like games depreciate so much immediately but that doesn’t happen with Nintendo like sure it went from $60 value to $40 but with other systems it’s like that $80 Deluxe Edition is already on sale for $4! So if they do Nintendo Selects I feel like 3 months before the release of the next generation and then they start it up. Like 50 total games in the selection! They each get put in cool new spines and instead of being $20 like the Wii U where it was from $50->$20 they could just do that they are half off so $60->$30 and $50->$25 yknow! And the games are on sale digitally too but it’s only for 6 months digitally so 3 months after the Switch 2 is out they are done and most likely all physical editions will already be boughten!

Yeah, I have a couple of these on 3DS & Wii U. Would be great if they come back.

because nintendo is greedy and they sell handheld games for 60$ because they can. they are on a big high at the moment, when they made the 3ds the price was also too high, they were too confident after the ds and wii. people need to humble nintendo with the switch 2....
