ANBERNIC RG405M | The Best I've Used To Date!

In this video I'm taking a look a Anbernic's new beast. The 405m boast a 4in IPS display powered by a Unisoc T618 with 4GB of RAM. On paper this thing should easily handle some of the more high end emulation. How well does it perform? Lets find out.

It can't be long before one of these consoles can play everything smoothly.

My brother showed me his RG405M over xmas break, and what i noticed right away was rhe build quality, weight, and overall solid feeling of the handheld. I can't talk about performance because we just played the retro game he created with Pico 8 (Food Fight, a vertical shmup with Fantasy Zone style bosses), but the controls and build quality were excellent.

I stick to PC for hardcore stuff like PS2 and later, but this is making me hopeful! I almost got the Odin but with delays and stuff it seems there are more options coming out very soon that can compete with it and it’s price. Plus I have a Miyoo mini plus and that plays all retro stuff with ease. Figured I’ll keep this for retro and when one comes out like the 405M that can play up to hopefully 3DS, I’ll get that for last decade stuff

i had this for a while before sending it back. it is one of the best handhelds for retro gaming it really is. only two things are not great at all : first the L and R buttons i think this explains for itself and second it is kinda small for my hands after playing like 1h i got hand cramps but overall for people with smaller hands this thing is a beast for a console

I love technology and I love that we’ve come this far where we can play thousands of games on one handheld.

To me, in the $150-$180 price range I don’t think anything beats the Retroid Pocket 3+ in terms of design, and price to performance. This is close, I just need a bigger console.

If you own this or the rg 505 there is a gamma os update you can go which will give you a very nice performance boost. It will wipe the internal storage though.

I would personally go for the RG505, which is essentially the same as this but with a Vita OLED screen. The RG505 would be my choice as I far prefer black bars on the sides of 4:3 games than having them on the top and bottom of 16:9.

I had no idea it had a touch screen. I just recently picked one of these up.

MvC2 was also on the dreamcast so that might make for a smoother experience.

sitting at 200+; its getting into the "just buy a used note 10 and a X2 PRO" territory. You can get a note 10 in really really good shape for 150-180$; some x2 pro's on ebay for 50-60$ as well. These retro console cpu;s really cant compete with even last gen phones; its not even remotely close actually (The snapdragon 855 is more than *TWICE* as fast as this T618 [which is basically the fastest chip these types of consoles come with at this time]; and you can root your phone to run base level operations without having to worry about the "fluff"). Its more work, but its also a LOT more machine for the money. All of this doesnt even approach the screen quality difference, which is going to be extreme on its own right. Lastly, and somewhat important... phones arent using volatile storage solutions, and *will* be a lot more reliable long term. The "portability" of some of these retro devices are their own thing, but these horizontal format consoles are already escaping "pocketability" lol. Just food for thought.

I'm interested, tho getting an RG35XX as my first retro emulation handheld, I kind of want to try another brand's like the Pocket 3+ when it comes to systems above the PS1. This review makes the decision more difficult to follow through with, tho~

As someone who still uses PS1 and PS2 regularly - I can say that even on the original systems games often dropped FPS and stuttered in some moments.
I remember Grand Turismo playing really well most of the time - but a couple of tracks - essp when cars were bunched up together. It stutters (a little bit) on original hardware. So does Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal World Tour and a few other racing games I have. Resident Evil in some of the more hectic fights had a few really noticeable stutters. Heck even turn based games like XCOM TFTD stuttered on the Geoscape screen from time to time.
So if it's "authentic" people are after - then consistent 60 fps is not authentic. In fact in 1995 no-one ever even talked about frame rates.
The questions to me should be; "Does it play well" and "Do I enjoy it"
Being fixated by frame rates and put off by a small stutter ever few minutes is just.... inauthentic :)

Just a littlle more power needed. It's still a solid emulation device, but I'd love to play RE4 and God of War on handheld on 60 fps.

Not a big fan of the placement of the D-pad being below the analogue stick, since i play mostly older games.

How you were initially holding it with the lightning my brain refused to see the bottom left button as anything other than a giant screw.... lol
