In Japan, just picked one up for a little over ¥800. Dirt cheap for the quality. It was sitting right next to the moleskin line which is going for around ¥3300 over here. I think midori is going to be my go-to sketch pad moving forward. Good stuff, thanks for the review!

I have the lined notebook with the premium paper cover, and oh gosh i love the cover. The paper almost feels like smooth suede, its water resistant, I adore it. I dislike the way tomoe paper sounds and how thin it is, so MD paper is really lovely for me

Midori MD notebooks have become my number one choice. I love the perfection of the minimalist design…so crisp, so perfect with all supercilious pieces pared away. The paper is a pleasure, the lines are non intrusive, subtle and muted. This is a beautiful notebook, a pleasure to use.

I love my Midori MD. I have the B6 slim and knowing what’s happening now with tomoe river paper, I’m really thankful that I like the MD paper so much. I know a lot of people are scrambling to find notebooks they love.

It’s a good review and helpful, esp. that checking part where u wrote with different pens.

I’ve recently received my first one in A5 lined paper. I am surprised by how much I like it. I’m not usually an off-white paper person, however I like this. I’m a 10 year tomoe river fanboy so getting me in another book for longer than a few days usually doesn’t happen. In this book it has and I am still writing in it a week later. Favourite pen so far is my Pilot Custom 823 with WA nib and kon peki ink. Thanks Blake 🙂👍🏻 I recommend these a lot and mine is in a TSL leather cover. The bookmark is removable cus its glued on the spine outside.

Excellent review, thanks. I've never used the Midori brand before, but this would be a great notebook to have at hand. The separator line in the lined version appeals to me for some reason. The MD aesthetic is sort of the opposite of the Hollywood notebook you recently recently.

Just ordered a couple versions of this with a couple clear covers. Never tried them. I kinda feel the appeal of the clear cover is being able to see the paper cover and cloth of the notebook, also for those that add titles/drawings/stickers to the front. Growing up watching anime, I always wondered what those plastic looking notebooks were in all the students rooms. Now I know and will get to try it!

Yeah, I totally swallowed the Midori MD aesthetic Kool Ade, Blake—all notebook forms (not least the fat A5 Codex model), the overpriced goatskin covers…even the Midori MD fountain pen (needed some adjustment, but now writing nicely)—all happily put to regular use.. I like pretty much all the Japanese fp-friendly papers, esp. TR and Graphilo but, since I care more about shading than sheening and because a wee touch of texture encourages some reluctant nibs to put out, Midori MD paper remains in my #1spot. (Except for the blue-colored grid format!). Another first rate review—thanks, as always.

Hey, Hadnemehle nostalgie is quite smooth ( which I imagine would be more fountain pen friendly, I couldn't imagine fountain pen ink bleeds through that), the paper is thick and it has hard cover. For painting, it perform well with most medium, thought colored pencil needs a bit convicing to really pop and it't not the best for layering watercolor, but dry washes look fine ( I myself draw multi layered watercolor drawings on them for years, you just need practice)

Just found your channel, very nice. You may already know this but you can hook thicker pens to a small penloop, by hooking them to it by the clip.

Yeah, very good notebook, very good paper, maybe a bit too yellow. Had the notebook soaked in the rain and it survived it perfectly . The plastic cover is very practical and dirt resistant.

Great video mate! Do you mind telling me if its okay to write on this MD paper using a regular cheap ballpoint pen?

The notebook cover pen loop is not for the pen barrel, it is for the pen clip. And you are right about the goat skin leather being way over priced! These are great notebooks. I have all of them and love them all. I enjoy the buttery smoothness of the paper with the perfect amount of feedback.

Super useful review; I bought one today! You mention that there are other companies making covers for this notebook. Which would you recommend? Thank you~~~~

What do you think of this Midori notebook as compared to a Moo notebook? Which do you think is better for fountain pen writing? I really like the way a Moo notebook is bound. Midori is so minimalist.

The bookmark colour is dependent on the size of the MD notebook you buy.
