Americans Trying British Candy | Our First Ever 99 Flake Ice Cream!!

We recently made a video of us trying some British candy/sweets/treats for the first time. We tried a Cadbury flake in that video and we weren't impressed at all. But, we had so many suggestions to try a 99 flake ice cream cone. Of course, we had never heard of this and had to look into it. We even went as far as trying to figure out how you were supposed to eat this treat. No luck with that, but we did order more flakes so we could try a 99 ice cream for ourselves! Obviously, we loved them and want more! We now understand why so many of you loved these as kids.

You need a longer cone. Eat the ice cream around the cone and push the flake down each time until it's at the bottom. Then once all the ice cream is gone from the top start eating the cone from the bottom up. So you get waffer, ice cream and flake in each bite. When you get to the top with the wide bit stuff it all in your mouth in one go. Job done.

They're very common in Australia. I need to eat it with plate underneath as it just ends up on your lap every time you take a bite.
Flakes in soft ice cream in a cone is a popular offering at festivals and car shows, etc.

99's were huge in the 70's and 80's. They're cheap ice cream but done in a way that when whipped up with air tastes soo good. What's more popular now is the local dairy ice cream. The quality is usually very very good and you can savour it a but more as it doesnt melt so fast. If you get a chance try yarde farm or salcombe dairy ice cream. 2 of my favourite brands here in Devon.

You can eat your Flake how you like. The 99 is the most popular. You can crumble on trifle, on top of cake, or with your hot chocolate in the whipped cream on top.

I always take the flake out and use it like a spoon or dipper, there's always ice cream stuck to the flake that way. Eat it and the ice cream like that till no flake left then enjoy the rest of the ice cream and cone.. I'm from Northern Ireland and its my favourite way to eat a 99.

I think the proper way to eat one is whichever way you find most enjoyable! You were doing it pretty much the usual way, though, no problems there, except that you'd normally have a raspberry syrup drizzled over it too.

It's even better with raspberry sauce, (red sauce)When it runs, it is a sticky mess, but American icecream tastes different, it's not the same as a MR WHIPPY from the icecream van.

My fav way of having a 99 is with crushed nuts, flake, liquorice sauce and mint choc chip sauce.

you can eat flake with many recipes... broken on top of trifles or ice cream, broke on top of thick creamed coffee, broken up and put into sponge cakes, or just as is a chocolate bar... my personal favorite is melted inside a donut...
