I used the Lore Master's Deck to come up with an original idea for a D&D monster (or a species for an original fantasy setting if you're a writer). The deck is a good, quick prompting system for creating storytelling ideas for writers, Dungeon Master, game masters, worldbuilders, and just about anyone!

I would have interpreted it thus:

The hive mind colony of giant scorpions keeps members of the cartel as “pets”, similarly to how ants use aphids in their colonies. It’s a symbiosis, the humans provide them with nutrients (the cartel deals in illegally enlarged foodstuffs) and the scorpions protect them in return.

Recently, tired of the heavy policing from the kingdom’s guard, the scorpions have surfaced from their shadowy depths and have attempted to eliminate the royal family, almost successfully. The king was slain, and so was his family, but one of his heir survived thanks to the heroism of his private guard. He now vows for revenge and justice against the cartel and their skittering overlords

Imagine this:

The players stumble upon a series of murders on influencal people in the realm. After some investigation they uncover an assassin specialised in killing with poisonous animals - those small scorpions.
They have a few in their posession and are remarkably easy dispatched.

Allthough further investigations doesn't lead to any mastermind behind the assassin. Also the guy wasn't really that good of a murderer, pretty new to the biz (or an exceptional actor...)
Then the killings in a similiar pattern start again...

It all goes downhill, until the players figure out, that the assassins sent aren't the 'masters' of the scorpions... but their employees....

Did the cartel adopt the scorpion as their symbol, or did the scorpions infiltrate the cartel and are now using it as a front for even more nefarious deeds? 👀👀
