In today's we episode we sit my friend Circa of the Full Stack Creative youtube channel to discuss why the GH5 is still the KING of cameras in 2019.

It's interesting because he only began his journey into video at the tail end of 2018. After extensive research and comparing the available cameras of the day, he settled on the GH5, Here we explore why.

Great review guys. BTW 400Mbps is compression ratio and codec is x264 or x265 HVEC. I'm not sure why some sources call it codec. It's like 100% compression ration on JPGE. JPGE is a codec not 100% ratio of it. ;)

My company makes a lot of Broadcast TVCs here in Australia, we still delivery the rendered files as HD 1080p, is some cases like Regional stations still broadcast in SD.
No Australian TV Station is airing in 4K. We shoot in 4K and dumb it down for television broadcast here, it will be some time yet when our TV stations broadcast in 4K. Which means our GH5's have a lot of usable life before we change our camera equipment.

The Panasonic GH5 and GH5s are on my shopping list.

Good to see you back Alex! Will you be putting out a tutorial for the GH5? Would love to see you talk about optimizing and how to get the most out of the GH5

I think the only downside to the GH5 is sensor size for low light and the sub par AF from Lumix. But most pro-sumers dont use AF. We also have the GH5S for the low light.

I love my GH5, I use it mainly for wildlife videos now that I got my Sony a6400 for vlogging (but I have to use a stabilized lens, no ibis). Having rock solid autofocus is awesome when I need it, but I think the GH5 video just "looks" better. I can't quantify why but the GH5 video is more pleasing to the eye. And I hear all the time "real filmakers don't need ibis", but man that stabilization, when coupled with a Power OIS lens is crazy good to have. And the cherry on top is that with the GH5's 2 times crop, I can shoot wildlife with a lens/camera setup that is lightweight and a fraction of the weight and size of other systems but matching the reach. Plus, the GH5 is a tank. I love my Sony, but all the Sony cameras I've handled just feel fragile, but you just know when you pick up that GH5 that it could go through anything and survive.

The 4K live crop is the number 1 feature I miss on my G85. In the future I can see myself buying another Panasonic camera used just for that one feature alone. For product shots, you just can't beat it and it saves so much time! The GH5 stabilization destroys all other brands stabilization other than maybe the new traded the flip out screen on the Panasonic for Autofocus on the Sony, makes my life so much easier since I mainly just shoot myself.

I disagree. The BMPCC4K requires just as much effort as the GH5. I know. I shot a feature film with the GH5. I shot and graded the GH5 footage for the entire feature. I was grading my BMPCC4K in the first week I had it without problems because the workflow was pretty similar to the GH5 footage, except that BRAW gave me MORE to work with in post. As far as IBIS goes, yes, the GH5 has that out of the box. The thing is, I had my 12-60mm lens from my GH5 that has Image Stabilization, that I slapped on my P4K. Now, I have pretty steady footage. And sure, other lenses don't have I.S. making it harder to stabilize "handheld" shots. But, that's just it. I'm a film maker. Not a vlogger. Only vloggers are concerned about Auto Focus and stability every moment of the day. Get yourself a tripod, or a gimbal, if you want stabilized or non-bouncy footage.

With BRAW, and all its compression choices, you have SO much power in your hands its ridiculous. Now, don't get me wrong. The GH5 is a game changer in itself, given its features for its price point. It's a brilliant camera. But, if you want cinematic footage - with cinematic choices - then the BMPCC4K wins hands down. At least, in my book.

In the end, if you're looking to get into film making, and not just vlogging on YouTube, I would highly recommend the BMPCC4K. Especially given that it has so much power for its cost. And, if you're like me, and you already have Micro 4/3 lenses, you're even in better shape. Yes, you will end up buying other accessories to add to the BMPCC4K. But, that's true of any camera that you intend on using for film making. As far as vlogging goes, I have a Sony a5000 that actually records nice 1080p footage.

When it comes to DaVinci Resolve, I cannot think of a better program to wrap your head around. For one, there is a free version. Two, it's easier to learn than most people think. I've spoken to professional editors who are actually looking to switch to DaVinci Resolve because of its power and ease of use. If you want to get the most out of Resolve, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube and for more professional training, there's Ripple Training, who I highly recommend for their excellent, well-paced tutorials for Resolve. If you want Resolve Studio, it's a ONE TIME cost of $299, and you get EVERY upgrade for free to the end of time. No expensive subscription plans like Adobe. LESS than one year of subscribing to Adobe will pay for Resolve Studio.

This comment is not being sponsored by anyone. I do not work for Blackmagic Design or Ripple Training. I work for myself. But, if you want to raise your game and become a film maker. Than I recommend the BMPCC4K and DaVinci Resolve. The time and effort you put into both will pay off immensely over time. Believe me. I'm speaking from experience. Real world experience.

But if you shoot still more, there is not so much advantage for GH5.

I hate that this is true - it's been around for so long and still I can't justify moving to a different camera!

FUJI XT-3 - No Stabilization but autofocus for me wins out.

Also, I'm biased AF since getting mine yesterday XD XD

The GH5 is the best camera for low budget filmmakers. I now have a GH5s to pair with my GH5. I bought my GH5 second hand off Ebay too for same amount 1 year ago.

A7s3 will rise up from the volcano and reclaim the throne as the best compact camera. GH5 and bmpcc4k are living on borrowed time.
