10 Things That Will SHOCK You About Visiting New York City

5 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Trip to New York City

Advice on Hotels in New York City

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

If you are on a road trip on the east coast, don’t attempt to bring your own car into the city. Traffic is terrible and divers are wreckless. Best to park outside the city and take the train in.

I made the mistake of holding the door open for someone. Should've started charging cover I ended up holding that damn door for like 50 people lol

Don't go up Empire State building. Go up to Top of the rock where you will see a great view of the city, including the Empire State building

You are right about New Yorkers being friendly and helpful. I mashed up my knee when I was a paratrooper in the Canadian army. Periodically it gives out. I was in NYC on business and was crossing 49th, and all of a sudden I was doing a face plant in the middle of the street. Suddenly I was surrounded by people ....helping me up me to the curb. One guy stood in the middle of traffic with his hands outstretched to keep me from being run over. A woman was on her cell phone calling 911. She thought I was having a heart attack. Great, kind, caring folks, and they get a bad ...undeserved ....rap.

DO NOT attempt to rush onto the subway train before first letting people off, because it's RUDE, and the chances of getting yelled at by someone else rises exponentially. The same should always be for elevators.

I fully agree with # 6. I was there several years ago and I got lost. I had a very confused look on my face and 2 young ladies stopped and asked if I needed help and I explained I was lost. After finding out where I was trying to get to. They not only told me how to get there but they took the subway with me to make sure I got off at the right stop.Of all the things in my trip there, their help and going out of their way to help me still stands out in my mind, many years later, as if had happened yesterday.

Don't try to cram into the subway the second the doors open. Stand to the side of the doors and let people get off the train first.

Don't say good morning (as gentile southerners warmly do) to strangers on the street. They'll think you're hustling them for a buck.

As a New Yorker, I will never understand why people come all the way here and eat at Olive Garden in Times Square? And yes you are right, sooo many free things to do. Movie nights in Bryant Park in the summer, donation Wednesday’s at the Bronx Zoo, if you go to a SUNY college MoMA is free.

I live in New York. You're right, we are not mean! We just have to deal with so many people all around us at all times, many of whom are completely nuts, so we keep to ourselves by default. We're a little suspicious of others because trust me...WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL and we know it's sometimes best not to look. This city can be rough on you after a long time, and it's crowded almost everywhere, so you have to be a little self-protective so you don't get annoyed with everyone. This sensory overload is rather shocking for tourists, so just imagine how exhausting it can be at the end of a bad day.

But helpful, hell yes. I love helping lost tourists! We are proud of our city and love being the ones to give you the "real" story.

Subway Escalators: During rush hr, do not stand at the left side of the escalator. It’s a unspoken rule that people who are in a rush can walk up the escalator at the left side while others stand at the right side to wait. It drives us crazy when you see tourists blocking our path.
