This is not true his mother passed away before him, her death is the reason his brother's killed because his grief made him put the entire empire under a year long mourning period (so long that even today there is a Zulu proverb "ukukhihla isililo sika Nandi" which is used when someone is crying uncontrollably and means to weep for Nandi, he told his assassins (his half brothers and his general) "You can kill me but you will not rule this land, with my death the swallows (White settlers) have won." His chief praise poet Somxhamama begged his assassins to kill him with the same spear because he would praise no other King after Shaka. But before they killed the poet he recited the praise poem until he lost his voice.
