Diving backwards, known as a backward entry, is often used by scuba divers for safety reasons. It allows them to maintain control while entering the water, especially when carrying heavy gear, and minimizes the risk of injury from tripping or falling forward. Additionally, it helps to keep their fins away from the boat's propeller and prevents them from accidentally kicking others while entering.

Another example that actually sometimes happens: if they have fallen forward, then they have a potential to smack their head on the bottom on the boat, so its a safer and easier to fall backward

honestly the answer is probably cuz the large scuba gear in the back would hit the boat, and said scuba gear is heavy so its easier to lean back instead of jump forwards.
