German and Icelandic speaking-people have the easiest time learning other Germanic languages as they are used to the most complex grammatical systems of the current Germanic languages.

My ancestors arrived in North America in the mid 1700s but my heritage is British, Scots and Germanic Europe. I do have markers for Frisian in NW Europe and 15% Norway. I find this fascinating.

Northumbrian, and Geordie slang words are actually Germanic, and some Norse words. I always wind the Scot's up when I said the Angles ruled the south east parts of Scotland, before it was Scotland, and Anglo Saxon's are the English, so Scot's have English in them 😂 History is so cool.

Is it weird that I'm an ethnic russian, but I'm fascinated by the old-middle english language, the history, the people equally if not more than my own? Also, it was no surprise to me to find out that old english had more to it than modern english, like acussatives, etc. The english of the king james version of the bible always felt similar to my own in terms of langauge simply because it wasn't as simplified as modern english.

I can understand and read old english easily and it is very similar to Flemish, Dutch(Frisian). Our Flemish language came from the Franks(west-germanic family tribe of the Saxons). Our Flemish is a very very old language and didn't change so much. The Franks came to Belgium for the rich farming lands and mixed with the Belgian Celts.

I just finished watching the last kingdom serie. As you all know it's about Saxon, Vikings, britons etc etc, for some reason I love England history.

I lived in England for more than 10 years and my father was from Scotland. I lived in Mercia and Northumbria as well as a few other places. I probably lived in Yorkshire for the longest time that I was there.

very sad that frisian or flat german dying out in germany .. for me as a
dude from schleswig in northern germany (the viking city) it is my fav.
dialect.. the goverment should do more for the various culture in germany to protect this languages .. (btw sorry for my english :D:D )

There is an old rhyme I heard once.
"Good butter and good cheese, is good English and good Fris."
Meaning this phrase is linguistically pronounced and placed properly in both languages.

Whenever someone says old english, i think of an anglo saxon warrior swinging an axe on the battlefield. Idk why but it just hits me like that

Actually Luxembourgish is a High German Dialect not a Dutch based Language. I find Old English closest to Frisian.

I was riding on a bus through Heathrow airport and there were three people that I could hear talking. I thought that they were talking English but kept hearing strange, often guttural words thrown in. At first I was confused until I realised that they were talking Frisian but it really did sound mostly like English.
