I'm brazilian (but I don't live in the Amazon) and I can say that more than 91% of deforestation here is due animal agriculture. They use the land to grown soy to feed the cattle, sometimes they use the land as pasture for the cattle. And some carnists tell me that vegans are eating the Amazon...

Cowspiracy really woke me up! Also after watching Earthlings - which still gives me nightmares. I went Vegetarian the next day. It's been super hard for me since I have always, always eating meat for two meals a day! Just crazy!

So, I have totally cut out the meat. Once I get that down, I will work towards full vegan. I have already cut out a lot of animal bi-products (like milk, yoghurt, ice cream But do still like eggs, and some cheeses. However, I do intend on being 100% Vegan in 6mths time.

Cowspiracy is an eye opening doco. Everyone should watch. Then watch Earthlings.

+Patrick65879 I can't reply for some reason. The pre-industrial bison population for example was only 30-60 million, which would not produce enough methane to warm the Earth. As of 60 years ago we were already well above 300 PPM of CO2, a threshold that wasn't naturally broken for millions of years. In the 50s we could drive cars without any consequence, but now tail pipe emissions and methane from cattle are both issues.

The 51% number comes from "Methane" which is supposed to be 100× more destructive than CO2
