I’ve been looking for a good wooden dish brush for so long but my old plastic one is still going strong after 5+ years of use 😅 I think it’s because I can put it through the dishwasher, so it keeps its shape and stays clean.
So just a friendly reminder for any new eco-friends; throwing away or swapping out a functioning item just because it’s plastic is not sustainable! Use your things until they’re broken/empty/unusable before making your swaps! After almost 5 years on my sustainable journey I still use plastic things and items every day, like my hair brush I bought 12 years ago, plastic ball point pens, plastic floor sweeping brush, plastic food containers etc. You can of course buy a backup item for when your old one is done, but please remember to always use up what you already have before buying something new and throwing away something that is perfectly fine and usable. And if you need something made from plastic, try to find it second hand first!

First! Your tips are so helpful! Just wondering how often exactly we should soak them in warm water or vinegar and how long for?

I use dish cloths and then wash them, no mould, no bacteria and is easy to clean dishes with.

In rural India, people use coconut husk. Abundant, free. Totally sustainable. And you can replace it as often as u want.

And iron mesh scrub for tough grease. Most of our traditional utensils are made of iron, so they can take hard scrubbing, unlike the modern nonstick ones.

Iron utensils aren't only longer lasting than stainless steel/glass ones but also healthier to cook in. Mine have been passed down from 2 generations above.

I love how you showed that even tho they can crack they are still usable and can be used for a while longer

Or loofa. You can grow it really easy and it’s compostable I’ve used one in the shower and no mold and I don’t do to much special too it. Plus you can stick your fingers in the holes and use it like a scrub daddy in cups.

I think your dishwater should be much cleaner when washing dishes!

The bristles on my wooden brush smell bad. Is that normal? Even after disinfecting it.

Someone help me out. I have a bamboo hairbrush, which i cannot keep clean. I tried cleaning it with a toothbrush but its not working the way i would want to. Normally, with my other brushes (which are plastic) i soak them in water with baking soda after getting the hair out and it pulls out all the gunk just fine. I did that with my bamboo brush and it cracked. So if anyone has tips i would appreciate it

I replace mine every month because of the black spots!
