Do Windshield Repair Kits Work? (BUDGET DIY VS RAIN-X)

Today, I'm putting Amazon's 2 best selling Windshield Repair Kits to the test: Rain-X vs Do It Yourself brand. We're going to find out, which one works better, if at all... Can they actually make a difference to the 70" long crack I have across my F150's windshield? Will they be able to fill the bullseye cracks in my field of vision? Or will I be left with an expensive windshield replacement...

I have two of the bullseye cracks on my truck. Me, being the cheap sob that I am; used a small bottle of clear gorilla glue that came with a need like nose piece. I prepped the glass like you did and slowly applied the glue. Nine months later and the cracks haven’t spread or chipped. My wife thinks I’m too cheap lol.
Much Respect to you !

I would say that was a fair success Meg. Only time will really tell. The idea of these kits isn't really to make the crack disappear but to add strength back to the windshield as it's an integral part of the vehicles safety structure.

Nice to see that not everything can be fixed and shows the reality of some projects. I attempted this my self a while back with no real good results. Ended up having to replace windshield. Great video explanation the difference. Have a great weekend

I got a new-to-me BMW 435 a few months back, less than 3 weeks into owning the car I got a rock chip in the windshield. I've debated doing something like this before it gets worse, seeing this video gave me the confidence that I can do it myself. Thanks, Meg! For once the YouTube algorithm did something helpful for me!

That was fun!! I'm assuming insurance works differently in Canada from here in the UK... on the few occasions when I needed windshield repairs, the insurance paid out for a replacement. On one occasion (Renault Laguna II) I was expecting to have to either pay in full or at least a contribution because the laminate had gone blotchy between the the two layers of glass, but no! Didn't cost me a penny, even though the car was 10 years old by then.

Thanks again for today's 'Meg Fix' - I really look forward to it every week!

YouTube put you in my algorithm and I’m glad it did! Great videos from a person who admits they are a rookie and makes mistakes. Excellent work!

always look forward to your project video's coming out, when you said sorry to the windshield when the wiper slipped out of your hand made me laugh and also when you called the cheaper kit a "knock off". already looking forward to your next one

ChrisFix places a thin piece of cardboard with his channel logo printed on it over the license plates of cars he works on. This might save some time in editing and help to advertise your channel's name. Thanks for posting your experience!

In the States my car insurance has a option to cover cracked windshield. The additional cost was not that much and is one less thing to worry about. Great video as always. Keep up the great work

Having been an automotive glass technician for over 15 years, I’ve fitted thousands of windscreens (windshields for our North American friends) and I can tell you before even starting, this will not work. For those saying it looked like it worked - it didn’t. All it did was dull the light refraction you could see in the crack which is why it looked like it “sealed up”, but it actually didn’t. Also, “repairing” the crack was pointless as once a crack has reached both sides of the screen, it has no where else to go anyway.

Onto the chip repair, yes it is entirely possible to repair chips - again, I’ve done thousands of them. So I’ll watch to the end to see how that came out, as most chips are fully repairable, so it will be interesting to see how the cheap kits compare to the professional kits.

(Top tip, apply a little polish to the surface of the glass when you go at it with a razor blade: it cuts down the horrible noise. ALWAYS hold the blade at 90° to the glass, and NEVER “cut” the resin off)

So… I woke up this morning to find a boomerang craxknin my windshield. i was freaking out because i do t have the money to replace it. While wallowing in my despair I ended up on your vid. Not trying to sound crazy but I closed my eyes, said a serenity prayer, then searched for a good vid to help me. Yours was the first that popped up. If this aint fait idk what is. I have a white lifted f-150 almost just like the one in the vid. Same kind of crack, basically. I too cant feel it from the inside. Man, i was Your vid helped me so much. Thank you!!! PS you are beautiful

Great to see ya at work again! Just started the vid and paused for a moment to see if that headlight is going to be in an upcoming video. The projects are all around you. Simply love the channel and your videos. Mostly love the premise they are both built on. With your curiosity and tenacity nothing is out of reach. Happy Saturday!

I used a rainx kit on my semi. I went 2 years before replacing it due to scratches. My truck gets inspected every 60 days. The crack was never caught.
Instead of brakleen. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the glass.

Great project. I have also tried RainX with similar results. Although you can still see the crack a little, I'm sure the window is much stronger and won't crack again. See you next time.

I think the fact the rainex side was harder to scrape means that it will probably be a stronger seal. The rai ex side may last longer. I’m curious to see how it is in the long run. Im a middle aged woman and I’m really proud of you for learning all these skills. It really sets you back when you don’t know how to use power tools or do basic repairs on your house or car. I’m trying now to learn at 44 but I can’t help but think of all the money I wasted because I was afraid. All that to say I really appreciate the encouragement to get out there and learn skills and to teach my daughters so they can be confident in the world.

Yeah I use to work at a glass place that did repair and replace on windshields. Smaller chips it would actually fill it in and make the chip disappear at times. The bigger ones didn’t but there was a tool that I used that would pull the glass up from the outside and used UV light to harden it.
