I once worked at a small design studio (it was also just starting doing motion graphics projects) and my boss didn't want to "waste" time doing storyboards regardless of what we told him. The first couple of projects we got REALLY LUCKY, because those were simple infographics and the clients weren't picky at all, but then we got one project that had illustration, 3D, green screen, etc. IT WAS HUNKY, and we begged my boss to let us do storyboards and styleframes. He said no, so we had to do the whole thing on the go... 1 whole MONTH of work... and the client HATED IT! From the style to the sequence, all to the trash and back to the beginning. Happy to report that the lesson was learned.

I'm not sure this video covers it exactly, but brainstorming ideas is so important in the process. I'd equate it to rehearsal when a director is shooting a film. No director says that rehearsal is a waste of time but it's increasingly rare. But it allows actors to come up with ideas which bring a film to life and make the characters feel authentic. Same with doing a personal project. If you take the time to mindmap before you dive even into the storyboarding process you push past the obvious and the idea will be stronger.
