Did you have to clone the hard drive to the new one? How do you get the operating system to work and other apple apps?

I have a question, is there a limit to how much storage that you can upgrade this iMac to? Because I first bought a Crucial 4TB SSD and it just wouldn't reformat for whatever reason. I thought it was defect, so I ordered a Samsung 4TB SSD and it was the same result. But when I tried to reformat a lower OWC 256GB SSD, it reformatted perfectly fine.
