The thing that baffeled me the most was how during maggellan expedition to circumnavigate the globe they started with 5 ships and like 200 men. Only one ship and 17 men returned, but by selling the spices and other valuables they obtained they had made a profit somehow.

My old D&D campaign gives you a nod.
"They call it Golden Saffron.. Worth its weight in GOLD, it is..."

In the Netherlands, we call something expensive 'peperduur', literally meaning 'pepper-expensive'...

For more context! Magellan's expedition only returned with one ship. That ship had cloves, yes those things you out into a ham sometimes, and those cloves brought in enough money to fund the next expedition all by itself.

In dutch there is an expression that goes "peperduur" meaning as expensive as pepper. Must have been crazy back then

I had read of a Portugese ship witb a cargo of spices was found abandoned and drifting, somewhere around 1600.
After being brought to England the value of the cargo of that one ship was equal to the entire GDP of England the previous year.

oxen, the tractors and trucks of the old days. Imagine trading in your Ford F350 or John Deere for a pound of spice

I read The Anarchy by William Dalrymple, and it’s mentioned that one of the first VOC voyages to return had something like 3, 600% profit/returns, delivering hundreds of tons of spices to Amsterdam. It was insane.

I remember hearing that the earliest known war was over salt, and that soldiers were paid with the flavorful crystals in question

A Lord's spice cabinet was a large part of their wealth, and was important when entertaining and impressing other powerful people

Spices were some of the most valuable things imaginable in antiquity. Now the dollar store down the street carries them by the pound.
