3 new bakkies that could rock the SA market

South African bakkie buyers are very brand loyal, which is why it would take a lot for a new bakkie brand to disrupt the establishment – many have tried and failed. However, there is a trio of new bakkies on the horizon – produced by Hyundai, Great Wall Motor (GWM) and LDV – that could change consumers' minds, because these bakkies offer something notably different to what's currently available in the market.

The upcoming second-gen Hyundai Santa Cruz will be built in right-hand-drive guise, which will make it viable for our market. As it has a unibody platform, as opposed to a traditional ladder-frame chassis, the Santa Cruz is not a workhorse, but a stylish and fairly practical lifestyle bakkie.

Next up is the supersized GWM P500 double-cab, which is expected to arrive in South Africa at some point in 2024. The P500 is almost 5.5-metres long and 2 metres wide, powered by a 2.0-litre turbopetrol hybrid engine and will sit above the P-Series bakkie in GWM's local line-up.

And finally, Chinese bakkie brand LDV recently launched its T60 range in South Africa. The top versions of this keenly priced, attractively styled and well-specced double cab is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that is notably more powerful (160 kW) than the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder bi-turbodiesel in the Ford Ranger and the 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel in the Toyota Hilux!

Is the Peugeot Landtrek not based on the or a rebadged LDV bakkie?

They're much cheaper than the price/s shown, but still haven't sold much.

No bakkie can be taken seriously if it does not have a single cab option.

As John Cadogan would put it: “None of those bakkies will give me a teepee in my pants.”

Its irrelevant in south Africa what chassis a bakkie is built on since like 4x4 most yuppies never go off road and most bakkies only carry the local shopping from fruit & veg.

I really miss the small half ton bakkies. All these big new monsters are too expensive and uneconomical for ordinary people like me. SA need to bring back the small cheaper options. I will drive my older NP200 until it falls apart or until a new small bakkie is released in SA, whatever comes first.

hyundai is actually exporting that waste of space that is the Santa Cruz😂.its expensive and hardly has a tray, the Saveiro is much better than this as a bakkie.

im dissapointed that GWM didnt give it its proper name King Kong Cannon but at least its an option that people have that cant get their hands on a F150.

so LDV is moving further west, interesting 🤔.
