2023 Toyota Sequoia | Was it Worth the Wait?

George W. was a lame duck president, we were just getting to know Taylor Swift and a gallon of gas soared to a record $4.11. The year was 2008 – the last time Toyota completely redesigned its most spacious, 3-row SUV. With its thirsty V8 averaging only 13 MPG in city driving, the timing of the introduction of the second-generation Sequoia was unfortunate as Americans started shopping for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Flash ahead 14 years – an unusually long product cadence, even for Toyota – and an all-new Sequoia has finally sprouted. But good things don’t always come to those who wait.

MSRP as-tested: $80,906

They really botched the cargo area with the seats being in the way. Hopefully they'll remedy that before I'm ready to upgrade my 2015 Sequoia.

I think you nailed it. It does look legitimately great from the outside. The top trim really needs more interior color options that don't include white leather. My mom had the original 2001 Sequoia SR5 and my brother still drives it to this day (he treats it like garbage and it still soldiers on without much fuss), so I have a soft spot for it. Back then, it seemed everyone was ditching their Tahoes and Expeditions for the Toyota - my mom always said it felt more "car-like" than the Expedition it replaced. The competition has more than moved on and while there's a lot to like here, it feels like Toyota doesn't quite understand the priorities of their target market - a criticism I leveled at the latest Lexus LX when car shopping earlier this year. I wish I liked both more. Here's to hoping they can pivot, but judging by how long the last generation was around for, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Great review--it certainly would be a step up from 2006 Sequoia that just passed 224, 000 miles today, but I am shocked Toyota didn't get the cargo storage area right--at $80K, all of the cons you mentioned should have been noted and addressed by Toyota. Beautifully re-designed, though, and it sounds like the powertrain issues have been worked. Amazing to pull 20 mpg on a car that big with that kind horsepower output. I can average 16 mpg at best in my 2006 if I drive like I belong in an age-restricted community, but I have been banned from several local gas stations for crying at the pump when filling up over the last 9 months!

As someone who views many car reviews… well done. Concise and informative.

I have a top trim 4Runner and have absolutely loved it. It is a beautiful vehicle. The fold-flat rear seats give it so much cargo space. The clunky 3rd row seats and lack of cargo space in the new Sequoia is a definite deal breaker for someone like me who would like to step up to a full-size SUV.

Good review, clearly outlines the good and the not so good.

Sounds like you PEGGED this car. Those cons are most unfortunate. Hope they can iron them out (but not sure how they can improve that cargo room issue, which is terrible in a car this huge).

Great Review. Love this new format. Not sure why they made some many compromises regarding packaging/room in the rear areas.

It does have remote start. Press the lock button twice quickly and on the 3rd time hold it. That goes for all Toyotas that have remote start (2021 models and up)

As Homer would say ….THOU!!! Toyota you screwed up . Cargo and no massage seating at $80K? What were you thinking 🤔

Dealers in my town are charging over $15K over the MSRP. Insane greed. I wanted to trade my 2001 Sequioa, but I gues it'll have to wait, no effing way I'm going to feed dealers's $ hungry bastards.

Toyota Tundra missed the mark with no 4wd Auto also. I think 1 ton and 3/4 ton Gm trucks you can get 4wd Auto now. For the masses its a great system. Perfect for intermittent slick spots when you don't need to lock.

With the price tag, the people buying one wont have any money to buy much else to store in the back so its okay. The biggest gripe of all should be the lack of fulltime 4wd.

Great review, Steve! Four wheel independent suspension would have been nice too!

I have a 22 highlander bronze’s edition that does the same thing but looks rounder style body. I get 600 miles on a full tank on a 17.1 gallon tank size. I really like the sequoia.

I waited and I was so excited to see it on the lot. Looked at it for 3 seconds and decided it’s Toyota’s cheapest junk ever made

I’m hearing about some issues with that V6 not being dependable. First generation…we’ll see.
