Hi Sharaine!

You can use that buttermilk if you like! Just make sure to freeze it beforehand. =)

Also, we didn't try this recipe with uncultured buttermilk, so I'm not 100% sure how it would perform. I would recommend making a small test batch to see how it works!

I have uncultured buttermilk from when I made butter from raw cream.  Do you think I could use this instead of cultured buttermilk from a grocery store?  Hate to waste oils and buttermilk if this won't work.  Thank you look forward to your answer.  Sharaine

Hi mercedes maldonado!

When I'm soaping, I like to have my lye and oils around 100-130F, and ideally within 10 degrees of each other. If the lye is at room temperature are there are butters with high melting points, they can start to solidify before your soap is emulsified. Having your temperatures around 100-130F should help. =)

For this recipe, the milk will be cooler so it won't scorch. Having it around 70F and the oils around 100-130F is a good temperature. Working with milk is a bit more advanced technique, but is totally doable if you follow the steps in this video. =)

Hi Kanon Mitsuhana!

Absolutely, exfoliants would add some nice scrubbiness to the Charcoal and Rose Clay Spa Bar. =)

I am curious if this soap is tear free? Is it possible to have a soap that is tear free? My grandchildren love the soaps but always seem to trouble getting the soap near their eyes. Thank you.

Hi soapqueen, thank you for your video in youtube, all of your videos are really awesome. I am came from Malaysia. And I have some questions always doubt me >< :
1. How long does the soap last if I added goat's milk ? (Since the goat's milk wilk spoil)
2. How long does the soap last if i added homemade carrot puree / aloe juice / any homemade ingredients?
3. Do I need to preserve my homemade ingredients before adding them into my soap ?
I am really get confused about it...
Btw, I have made a goat's milk soap on last year August 2016, but it still look nice and doesn't smell weird.
Hope can get anyone reply from my comment, thank you very much.

CHEM QUESTIONS: New soaper with tons of science, bio and chem training, often confused by odd statements that don't make sense given the likely chemistry people are working with. Don't you already have quite a bit of sodium lactate in with the lye already? Buttermilk is milk that has had it's sugar, lactose, (nearly) fully fermented into lactic acid, an organic alpha hydroxy acid (which is apparently good for the skin). You're adding sodium hydroxide to it, in excess (hopefully, otherwise there will be no base left for saponification), which would react with the lactic acid to form sodium lactate (that what sodium lactate IS the salt formed by reacting lactic acid with sodium hydroxide in an acid-base neutralization reaction, reaction of this type make a kind of salt and water!). But you're ADDING MORE sodium lactate as though you don't already have a lot in your bowl (I'd bet that in a few minute most of the lactic acid will be reverted into sodium lactate and you'll have a solution of sodium lactate, sodium hydroxide and other compound in buttermilk, including other salts of organic acids). Sodium Lactate isn't on the original ingredient lost either, I can see how salt would make a harder bar, but this doesn't seem necessary to me ... Does Bramble Berry have cosmetic chemists (chemist who specialize with the chemistry of ingredients in personal care, skincare and make-up) working for them?
