Muscle Memory: How Muscle Memory Works Explained (2023)

Muscle memory allows you to stay physically strong and perform motor skills with little conscious effort.

Muscle memory is a neurological process that allows you to remember certain motor skills and perform them without conscious effort. Skill retention from muscle memory can potentially last forever, barring any neurological or physical ailments.

In this video, I want to explain to you what muscle memory is and how we can utilize it to our advantage in training. COVID-19 has forced many of us to take an unplanned, long term hiatus from the gym. Breaks from training can be good for the body, but if you’ve been quarantined and taken a few months off, it’s likely you’ve experienced losses in strength and size.

So, when will your muscles bounce back once you do start training and lifting again?

Muscle memory allows athletes to perform motor functions faster and with greater accuracy without having to think about them. For example, muscle memory lets boxers and martial artists move quickly to evade their opponent without requiring extra time to consciously react.

The good news is, it won’t be like you’re starting from day one, since you’ve likely built a foundation of strength and muscle memory with all your hard work so far. Of course, this also doesn’t mean getting it back will be an easy process.

You still have to put in the work, eat right, and have a structured plan of attack, but muscle memory and strength training are like that cliché about riding a bike — once you learn them, you’re able to get back into the groove even after an extended break.
Watch till the end of this video and Let’s take a deeper look at what to expect

This motivated me to work harder on my next workout, haven't been able to workout because of other commitments and got sick of flu a few days ago but I got back in track! Is funny how you always uploads a video about something I need to incorporate in my workouts that day or just motivation. Awesome videos James keep it up man

Muscle memory is one of the bodies coolest features in my opinion. Not only does it allow you to keep a lot of strength even after you stop working out, its responsible for a lot of our coordination. With enough repetition your muscles can learn to do incredibly quick and complex movements with extreme precision, all without even having to think about it. Pretty much any professional athlete relies very heavily on muscle memory to perform their sports. Of course nervousness and anxiety can make you overthink things and mess yourself up. Thats why professional basketball players can’t make every free-throw, even though logically it should be second nature to them.

Thank you so much again, James! This was exactly the question, I recently had at a class in my personal trainer studies and they weren't able to answer me that question, because it is "too scientific"... Instead, people around me always get annoyed, because I ask about the reason behind everything.. Luckily, I have you by my side, who teaches me everything a good personal trainer should know about! :) Thank you for sharing your essential knowledge, so many people are lacking!

James this is brilliant. I have been in good shape for the past 3 plus years but the flu finally caught up with me. I avoid the flu at all costs as I have emphysema from poor choices while younger. This flu over the past 3 weeks has destroyed me. Although I am almost well again but have lost at least 6 kgs. I look like someone has skinned a rabbit. I just want to say thank you. Although I have not dedicated fully to my physique; I am in the best shape of my life due to what you share this channel. Thank you James.

It's so hard for someone who has never missed a day in the gym for 1-2 years straight to do what you say James. I took a week off for the holidays because I don't have any equipment in my parent's home and it feels damn awful.. It's not about whether gains will extinguish but mostly has to do with psychology.

This is great to hear, I plan on thru hiking the appalachian trail and it takes 6 monthes which means no gym time for half a year! Its good to know I can get back what Ive worked so hard to obtain.

I quit lifting for almost 6 years. Then went back into the gym and got my gains back within a couple months. Even within a few weeks people thought I drank some magic potion to get big real quick. Nope, it's just that muscle memory. So I can attest to this science from personal experience.

James I just want to thank you for all your videos. They helped me to be more knowledgeable. Especially, i don't look like a newbie anymore at our gym. I can now bench more than my body weight and have a healthy routine of work out set that works for me. Thanks again and can't wait for another video.
