Duvall as Augustus McCrae is one of the 10 greatest male acting performances in the history of Cinema ! (Whether it be for film or television.). Doesn't matter... It's an absolute masterpiece of genius!

One of those actors that can lift an average movie to a higher realization through the power and grace of his performance. There's actually a couple of his movies on this list that I haven't seen and will now make certain to. For what it's worth my top 3 are Tender Mercies, The Apostle and Open Range ( a fabulous western I highly recommend if you haven't seen it).

At this point in time, he is my favorite all time actor. Never fails to enthrall me in every diverse role he plays. I have to watch his US Army Col. R. E. Lee role in refusing Lincoln's request that he command the Union Army before Virginia session, at least once a month. I was named after R. E. Lee, and the erroneous 21st century attempt to apply alt-left denigration to Lee as another Hitler is unfair and pathetic political hackism. yes, I just coined that word. You cannot judge history thru the eyes of the present or the future.

Fans may disagree about the others, but most Duvall fans would agree that Gus McCrea in Lonesome Dove was a masterful piece of acting. His best.

Very rarely in all of the years that I have followed actors and actresses in films have I seen a bad performance from some of my favorites. Robert Duvall ranks high on that list. He has intelligence, intensity, and integrity and has always managed to give 110 percent of himself in every role that he's played on screen. These qualities are what made him the acting legend that he is today.

RD graced every role with peerless brilliance ... to separate each one is to split microns & becomes personal preference ... somehow I feel his true calling is that of a cowboy - no one wears "that hat" better - eg Lonesome Dove, Open Range, Tender Mercies (my favorite) to the rancher/cowboy of today !!!

Robert Duvall, the "Spencer Tracey" of the Baby Boomer generation. I would watch any movie he's in.
