Not just a cure but a complete future immunity by the looks of it.

My brother died from HIV. It's too late for him. I hope it saves others.

My father died of this horrible virus back in 1989 due to a blood transfusion from a car accident. This is bitter sweet for all those who lost loved ones from this disease.

stem cell research is probably the closest we’ll get to real miracle treatments

In 1993 when I was 10, my best friend died of AIDS having caught it from his mother, who got it from receiving a contaminated blood donation. I’m so happy to hear this news. Miss you forever Camron

this is a huge deal! it's tragic how many people died from AIDS, but the fact that there is now a cure is so hopeful. endless respect for the scientists who work on these cures so we can live better lives

A family member had HIV back in the late 80s, early 90s. His treatment was working and eventually he was so low on his HIV count that he was basically cured. Sadly the focus on his HIV had masked the stage 4 cancer he had. And by the time they found it, it had spread everywhere. We went from celebrating his "cure" to burying him within three months.
His brother, was dealing with HIV too and developed AIDS. He died one week before. So both brothers were buried at the same time. My birthday of all days.

I just hope that those who contract that horrible virus, get to live long enough to have it cured.

Besides economics, the chance of finding a donor with the gene AND compatible bone marrow is very small. It's less about money and more about chance. Let's hope they find a way to CRISPR that gene into the bone marrow of the patient itself.

I used to work in HIV and for a long time I didn't think I'd live to see this breakthrough. Thank you for posting.💜

If I recall correctly, this mutation first occurred in survivors of the Black Death. Survivors of the Back Death had developed this mutation which also makes their descendants immune to HIV.

I love hearing news like this because I'm deaf in one ear and I may be alive to see a fix for it. We are so close to fixing so many people with life long issues.

Damn, a single gene that make people practically immune to this deadly disease, they really are built different

Fuckin A right!!! This is science at its best!!! I wish my Uncle would have lived to hear this!!! This disease didn't kill him but it sure as hell affected his life to an extent that is hard to quantify with mere words. It's a new day!! Merry Christmas, everyone!!

Keep in mind that this is still very much in the research steps, and the reason they went with this high risk transplant was because the patient was also being treated for cancer, which is what the stem cell transplant was aiming to treat- still incredible, but I highly recommend looking into the longer story. Hoping for more research and successes <3

I recall the effect the Aids Epidemic had on all of us in the 1980's.
It wasn't just 'the Gay Disease' portrayed by the media frenzy, but a mental fear that gripped people.

I was going to be an Operational Medic, serving on the frontline with combat troops in the late 80's, and we had to seriously consider then that working on an Aids infected soldier or civilian could be a death sentance for us.
At that stage we were not sure if just touching infected blood would kill us.

This is good.
If your old enough, you remember the absolute hysteria that people had when HIV was first discovered.

About 40 years after the first case in 1985. That’s awesome. 👏

This is specifically how I wish my dear friend who passed in 2003 from an aids related illness could have had access to this cure. We always believed that there would be a cure in my lifetime. So happy to hear of this. RIP Jackie. ❤
