Scientists say they can cut HIV out of cells | BBC News

Scientists say they have successfully eliminated HIV from infected cells, using Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology.

Working like scissors, but at the molecular level, it cuts DNA so "bad" bits can be removed or inactivated.

The hope is to ultimately be able to rid the body entirely of the virus, although much more work is needed to check it would be safe and effective.

Existing HIV medicines can stop the virus from replicating but not eliminate it.

That virus expert did a fantastic job of distilling all that key information into less than 2 minutes and keeping it understandable to the layman

I lost both of my parents to HIV/AIDS in 1995. My dad was an IV drug user and my mom got it from him. She died first, in February of 1995 and my dad November 1995. I am extremely grateful for the chance at life that people have today even living with HIV. News like this makes me hopeful.

I was 17 when AIDS first made the news. 43 years ago. It would be great to finally defeat it.

“I definitely don’t have the answer to that question” made me lol as a nerdy scientist. The humbleness of it. Excellent explanation by the professor in record time. Great science communicator!

I lost many friends from AIDS. I lived and I'm negative. I'm still in therapy. I hope this works. Many died because of the toxic medication. It's better now

As someone who lost friends in the 80s from AIDS, I can't express how much I love these scientists. Thank you for service! I hope I can live to see the cure.

I've lost a few friends over the years to HIV/AIDS. This would be absolutely amazing if it's made public. ❤️

Lost my boyfriend/partner to AIDS in 2020 (further complications from bad/lazy doctors) but this plague is still ongoing, and not everyone survives on meds or has steady access to them.
I don't have the words for what a cure would mean. Just wish it was here sooner.

I am studying Biology rn in college, this is such a break through when it comes to understanding how cells function and adapt to its environment

My late wife died due to the side effects of this disease. Unbeknownst to others, she took ARV drugs irregularly, making the virus somewhat resistant to the treatment. She died of covid infection. I hope this discovery can save millions of innocent people.
