Nigerians DO NOT joke with opportunities. Ever! Their hustle spirit is 🔥

We had a black valedictorian in our hs. She hung out w the Asian and Mexican kids because the black students treated her like an outcast for not being “black enough”. She was really poor and came from a single mom home. Her mom was really strict and it worked to her benefit. But the black kids called her stuck up and wanna be white. She was def not stuck up at all. She was just hyper focused on her education.

It’s annoying when (as a black girl) people say I “sound white” simply because I know how to speak correctly and it’s annoying.
Then people accuse me of wanting to be white just because I actually do good in school and care about my grades. Like bro...

As a Nigerian 🇳🇬 we know where we’re coming from and will work our asses off to achieve what we want and make our family proud. There’s a Nigerian saying that goes “ Naija no dey carry last”. It translates to Nigerians can never come last. We have this competitive spirit. I love my people and I hope to instill these virtues in my children.

I will never forget Bianca in the fourth grade a black girl that cried over getting a B because she was a straight A student and her black friends tore her apart over the fact she wanted to get good grades that was 30+ years ago. she became an outcast among her black peers in high school

So true! My daughter (pharmacist) worked with a man from Nigeria. The store was in a ghetto area. He was shocked and disgusted at the conditions and behavior of the young people. “They waste the opportunity that most in Nigeria only dream of”!

Nigerian here! I came to America 6yrs ago. got a job after a year, promoted 4 times within 3yrs. And I remember the most hate and jealousy I got was from my African American siblings, not white Americans. As Africans, we’re taught that it doesn’t matter what situation you’re surrounded with, your actions will determine your outcome. We work hard for what we want, racism or no racism. So at the end, it’s all about mindset and actions.

This woman is so smart ! I knew of a Nigerian woman who had said the only racism she suffered was from Black Americans ! Let that sink in. !

I've had several different Nigerian families that were neighbors. Other than being Nigerian, they had another thing in common. They couldn't stand black Americans. They couldn't grasp the fact that they were born here yet claimed victimhood

AMEN! I’m mixed and went to an almost completely white school and of course my mother is white. However when I went to the city I was be ridiculed by black students for “thinking” I was white. Its strange growing up in a predominate white school that I never experienced any prejudice. It all came from black people. That’s when I realized it’s not about color it’s about culture

It's not just blacks either, I grew up in a mostly Hispanic town, in my grade at school there were literally only 2 white kids. And I couldn't tell you how many times I heard the phrase "don't be acting all white and smart like you're better than the rest of us"

That kind of mentality needs to be destroyed, no matter what culture is pushing it, if we are to advance as a society

As a black girl from Texas, I was told that I "talked white" and being not dark that I "wasn't black" ... I started reading early and I learned how to use slang sometime in high school because I was always getting "jumped" for being "uppity". I changed how I talked, essentially started to "act black" to stay safe. It's a crazy world....

😭Candace I had a student like this who came to our 50/50 black white inner city school and yes she was bullied not just daily but hourly by other black students (only) about how she was trash for “being white”, “sounding white”, “dressing white”, “being very smart”, “not being disrespectful” and more. I had her in the first class of day. I would have to keep her after class let out a few minutes to give her encouraging words and remind her that she was wonderful and doing everything right. I literally had to tell her that they were just jealous and trying to bring her down. She was in 9th grade. Hope she is doing well.

When I went to college and lived in the dorms, there was this one and only Nigerian guy who was so down to earth. Super smart and he was always studying. He was going to become a Neuro Surgeon. He came into the area where we had a TV and sat down (this was rare), and was listening to the other black guys who some of them were on the basketball team. They talked about nothing but basketball. After about 20 minutes, the black guys said man don't you play basketball in your country and Nigerian said with a smile, yes but its one of the last things on our mind. We like to use our minds to make ourselves better and to help out our family. The black guys shot back, but you can make big money in the NBA. The Nigerian said, not one of you gentlemen will make the NBA, if you were not excepted at some top University and even then, its only the select few the get chosen. He said, I have a great chance at becoming a Neuro Surgeon because we are taught to study hard and to work hard. I might not make multi millions of dollars for how ever long the contract is, that is if I don't get injured, traded, or just released, but in the long run I will make a good amount of money to live a good life and to help my family out and help my brothers and sisters make it as well. He left saying its all about looking long term, not short term. When he left the black guys just sat there in silence for a few minutes. I have to say, so did I. Its been over 40 years now and I hope that, that Nigerian man made his dreams come true.
