I actually believed in that they were nitwits (seen by the green inside) and tried to be useful but doesn't have enough knowledge for trading so he started to wander without the villagers that mock him and hid in a coat, while traveling he found new items and a llama, he also stole potions from the cleric. Despite the little of knowledge in trading he still works hard for a trade.

Actually the lore is that one day a villager was gonna take a test to see what jobs fits him but he failed all of them and then had to wear a green shirt to show he failed and left his village and then found flours they were yellow and blue and made a outfit so it hid his green shirt than abunch of time later he fought herobrine The end.

Its kinda like the wandering trader is just the villager with green clothes and travels around the world trying to find what will be perfect thing to sell because the green Villager can't have a job.
