ADU’s – An Affordable Housing Option for California

ADU’s or granny flats, in-law quarters, guest houses, casitas, or what else they may be called, are additional living facilities on the same land as the main house. With no land cost, this is an affordable way to increase housing supply. ADU’s can generate rental income to the homeowner or provide independent housing to a family member, like a grown child or an elderly parent.

The state law allows ADU’s up to 800 sq. ft., 16 ft. high, with 4 ft. side and rear setbacks to be built on any residential or mixed used zones.
