Derek is a builder who is absolutely obsessed with affordable housing and ADUs (accessory dwelling units). In this video he gives us a full tour of his small full-time home in Oregon, which is a beautiful, minimalist 524 square foot space that he built in 90 days for $60K USD. Derek believes in collaboration instead of competition, and so he shares his blueprints, shopping lists, and loads of tips and resources for free on his website and on YouTube (links below). He also believes that affordable housing doesn't have to be built with cheap materials, so he uses solid wood floors, granite countertops, slate tiles, metal roofing, and more because they'll end up costing less over time than if he used cheap materials and had to replace them more frequently.

It’s such a rarity to find someone who is not in business just for the dollars. I admire the fact that you share your plans for free. We need more people like you in this world!

Kudos, a breath of fresh air. Someone who is more concerned about solving a problem than putting money in their pocket.

Get rid of the ladder, build storage-capable compact stairs, and add a safety railing upstairs, and wow, this is such a versatile design for even older people!

The fact that you use good materials, they are also healthy! No poisons is very important. Thank you.

Wow, Derek is such a star for open-sourcing this! 😃And $60k in 2024 is a stunning price for such a functional and spacious home (especially including good quality materials). Kudos! 👏👏👏 9:14 The practicality, fire resistance, and wheel chair accessibility of the front yard is so appreciated. Thank you for sharing! : - ) ❤

Thanks for the feedback. No housing option is perfect, but the fact that zoning laws are changing to allow multi fam housing on lots that have only allowed a single house for decades, is a good thing.

"Collaboration, not competition!" Awesome way to live. Thank you for your generosity of spirit in sharing all of this precious information and expertise. Most folks would charge for what you freely share. 🙏

He's a blessing. He does mind his plans for free 🆓. He is passionate about his work and he is trying to actually help the tiny house 🏡 movement.
We don't deserve him. I wish you a long life and good health, so you can help more people.

Solving the housing problem AND sharing how you did it - (for free) with the intention of helping others is amazing!

willing to share it all for the sake of others. Kudos to you. Love it. Only addition I'd make is use the space opposite the kitchen. by bathroom. Pantry, cleaning closet for broom, vacuum, etc. Nice job.

! ! ! MAGNIFICENT ! ! !

Not Only the House, But the Project of This Great Man Who, No Matter What Happens,

Has Already Left His Legacy With His Willingness to Build and, Most Importantly, to Share !

THIS is the kind of radical solution focused content I've been missing. For the last 5 years it's been a lot of custom, one-off, often very expensive projects that are from builders who disproportionately cater to folks who have the cash for traditional homes. I want revolutionary housing ideas. No, this isn't viable in my area but in time I think it may be. I love how the resources are made available and how PRACTICAL and lovely the resulting dwelling is.

THANK YOU so much for introducing me to this creator.

This is amazing. Now, make an adult that is for seniors that can't climb a ladder. Recessed motorized stairs in the wall where the ladder is.
Pocket doors are the only way to go. Ty for making the plans free!

Love that the loft is 7 feet; it's amazing to be able to stand up in there! The only con I can see is that ladder to go the the loft. As I get older... this is starting to look more like an issue. But if there's some way to add a proper staircase and keeping most of the design & finishes: this is a bang up ADU!!!

Thanks Mat. I like this concept much better than the standard Tiny Home. This design has a lot of room for changes inside. One could easily add a granite top island in the kitchen with seating on the outside. It is probably worth spending the money to have a multi-functional clothing storage unit built into the left side of the closet. No one design is fit for everyone but this layout can easily work for singles, couples, and even seniors. Brilliant!
