Altruism and Exploitation in Phase I Clinical Trials

How do we think about the role of altruism in Phase I clinical trials? Is it always a good motivation? I argue that it is not always a motivation proper, but can also be an effect of systemic social injustice. Building on MacIntyre's theory of practice and virtue, I posit a way to consider researchers' responsibility to Phase I trial participants.
